Have You Struggled with Anxiety or Depression? Christian Singer Sara Groves Relates

Christian musician Sara Groves has a beautiful, crisp, clear voice and sings encouraging messages that lift the soul. Groves recently was interviewed by “CCM Magazine” and discussed her battle with depression and her public panic attack. Here is part of the interview, titled “Eyes on the Prize,” in which she describes her music and her need to reach out to God during this difficult time.

CCM: Depression is a real, but often glossed-over issue for so many people. Where do you think the genesis of yours was?

GROVES: Three years ago I was singing at a prayer breakfast, and I was halfway through Add to Beauty,’ a song I’ve sung hundreds of times and I had a panic attack on stage … It was terrible! It began because it happened while I was on stage … It became very difficult to fulfill my obligations. But I knew I wasn’t quitting for this; it right away drove me to my knees. I had to wrestle with the Lord. Right away, I knew that I was going to get through this…That first year was just awful, but I’ve had so much victory this past year.

CCM: Did you see anyone to help you through that time?

GROVES: I saw a great Christian counselor and she started helping me right away. From the first time I talked to her, she said, ‘Your emotions, your own body is lying to you. You feel like you’re going to die, but you’re not going to. You can do everything you did before. Right now, your mind is telling you, you can’t.’ I had to learn to ignore my emotions…

Groves is an inspiration and proves you that you can get through anything with God’s help! He is the one to turn to when you feel sick, lonely, depressed or anxious. You can remove these things from your life–they are NOT FROM GOD!

In the Word, the Lord says, “Do not be afraid” and “Do not be anxious.” The Bible tells us to pray instead and that God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds! It is written and the Lord will fight for you! The name of Jesus is powerful and you can cast out any type of anxiety, worry or fear when you speak His name.

Do not be anxious about ANYTHING, but in EVERYTHING, by PRAYER and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the PEACE of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4: 6-7).

I pray this will influence anyone who experiences depression, fear or anxiety. Call on the name of Jesus and he will comfort you! God is always near so you are never alone. If you feel overwhelmed, call a friend to pray with you, read your Bible and seek the TRUTH. Use your spiritual weapons and you will have VICTORY!

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7).

I have given you AUTHORITY to trample on snakes and scorpions and to OVERCOME ALL the power of the enemy; NOTHING will harm you (Luke 10:19).

Ive had my share of troubles on this topic before …. But, one thing i do know is we were not created to go through such things. A while back I went through some major stuff, it seemed like i was making all the wrong decisions and pushing everyone away without even trying. But, through God’s grace and never ending love he forgave me and cleaned the slate for me 🙂 Now, when i smile you know its because of Him! By this Day I am healed by the stripes of Jesus! ! Once and awhile (like with anyone who has a relationship with Jesus)evil tries to whisper lies in my ears but, i shut them out because, i know Greater is he that lives within me ! For anyone who is struggling believe me it will all come to pass!
He is an awesome God he is !

I suffer from depression and anxiety as well. I once had a panic attack during Church but I manage to fight it through and I was proud and happy with myself that I was able to listen to the Preacher till the end.

I have really bad anxiety that resently hit me. Both sides of my family suffer with bad anxiety and are on medication for it. I know I need to work really hard to deal with this unethical fear, but its hard. I pray that God will be with me and help me. He has already blessed me so much!

I have no idea why, but I teared up while reading this and listening to the song. I know I need to work on my anxiety, and this helped me so much. Thank you.

This is so true. God can help us out of anything–we just have to let him!

Wow! This describes me! I also sing and I have a tremendous fear of singing publicly because I had a panic attack about 3 times a few years back. I’m still struggling with my fears…but this article gave me hope, so thank you! <3
