Have you ever wondered if you’ve heard God speak to you? Or have you heard the Lord speak something to you, but thought maybe it was a coincidence or just your own thoughts? I want to address this subject today and back it up with verses in God’s Word from the Old and New Testaments.
Today, we live in a world filled with so many options and distractions, God’s voice can easily be drowned out. How can we hear God’s voice if we’re always on our phones and filling up our schedules and we never sit and make time to read God’s Word? And when we do, in fact, make time for God, how do we know if He is really speaking to us?
In the Holy Bible, it says in John chapter 10:27: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
Sometimes God speaks to us through His Word, through people or through the power of the Holy Spirit. God can speak through people like a pastor or another believer, but remember, He will never contradict His Word. Always ask yourself, “Does this line up with God’s truth?” If it doesn’t, then it probably is not of God and is a counterfeit or is false.
The Bible says that Jesus is our shepherd and we are like sheep (John 10:3). The Word of God says that the Lord’s voice will be distinct from a stranger’s, and that the more we read the Word, the more we will be familiar and clear about God’s direction for our lives.
It also says in the Word in Isaiah chapter 30:21, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'” God will always confirm what He says because He leads us like a shepherd and won’t lead us into harm’s way or lead us astray. He will guide us into safe pastures.
The Lord’s voice at times can be like a still whisper, yet it is strong and powerful. The voice of the Lord is like the instinct in your spirit that knows what is right versus what is wrong. Although sometimes God’s voice is like a whisper, it is in those quiet places where we can really hear Him in our devotion time. Do you spend time quietly before the Lord? Do you hear God speak to you?
“And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small VOICE.” (1 Kings 19:12) Another version says, “After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle WHISPER.”
If you want to hear God’s voice, ask Him and also read the Bible, which is God’s Word, also known as the Holy scriptures. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness….”
Has God ever spoken to you? Did you get confirmation in His Word about it or in your circumstances? Hearing God is exciting and powerful. If you need clarity on a word you believe God gave to you, then it is important to ask Jesus to confirm the Word, and through that confirmation you will know.
Ask God to speak to you and I’m certain He will! Nicole (PI founder) calls these “God-incidents,” where the Lord confirms what He says through signs to prove that He is speaking to her.
