What does it mean when the Bible says that Christ is the head of the body of Christ (the church), and that we are the dwelling places of the Holy Spirit?
The church (aka the body of Christ) is a figurative picture of Jesus on earth, but since He is on the throne, seated at the right hand of the Father and is no longer on earth, it means that WE are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16, Mark 16:19). Imagine the people of God (the church) as an actual body, and Christ as the head. It is a powerful picture, and the Lord tells us that each person in the body of Christ (like an arm and leg on a human body) has its own responsibility and function here on earth with different gifts.
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? (1 Corinthians 3:16)
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. (Mark 16:19)
How can we have the same power and authority as Christ? Isn’t it an honor that God would choose His church to represent Him and to manifest His wonders on earth for His glory? The Bible says that Jesus told the disciples that when He left, He would leave the Holy Spirit, which would be better for humanity and that we would even do greater works than He did…how can it be?
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. (John 14:12)
I have told you this while I’m still with you. However, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything that I have ever told you. (John 14:25-26)
The body of Christ is a powerful force on earth when unified and when walking together in the Spirit aligning with the Word of God. What a high privilege it is to be a part of the Lord’s marvelous work. It is quite hard to fathom that God would die for us and then choose us to be His hands and feet.
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. (1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
