How to Be Healthy All Summer Long!

    Summer is the season when I really think about my health–we all know the beach is a place to swim, bike and catch the sun’s rays! Most importantly, I reflect on my personal health. Am I caring for the temple God has given me? Do I feel comfortable in the skin I am in?

    I’ve always been pretty active–I did gymnastics when I was little and cheer and dance teams in middle school and high school, along with beach camps in the summer and running around playing with friends. Being physically active is so important to your health! Interestingly, most young people ARE active because of sports or mandatory PE classes. Once you are out of school, however, no one forces you to go work out or remain active.

    It doesn’t so much matter what you look like on the outside, but what is happening on the inside. (Of course, spiritual health matters, too!) I want to encourage you to exercise 30 minutes a day, even if it is walking your dog with a parent, riding your bike, doing a power walk, swimming or jogging!

    Any type of physical activity that increases your heart rate is important. Now, if you are already active in sports, or are in a camp…you are already ahead in fitness! Good for you!

    Next, I want to discuss diet. It is so easy to just go to the drive-through and get a quick hamburger or fries. Now in moderation, that isn’t terrible. I believe if you have a balance in life you will be healthy. But don’t skimp on your fruits and veggies and forget how nutritionally valuable they are. We all have our weak food moments when we splurge, but treating our bodies as God’s temple and feeding ourselves with good fuel will benefit our health.

    What are your favorite fruits and veggies?!

    I love bananas–they’re filled with potassium. If you are ever sore from running or dancing, you should eat a banana! I also love blueberries, which are filled with antioxidants and are great for you. Strawberries are so delicious and healthy and I love peaches in the summer, too! I can’t forget avocados (which, yes, are a fruit!). They are filled with Omega-3 acids, which are important for heart health.

    Veggies are also so important, and some veggies don’t even taste bad! Steamed carrots are tasty and are great for your skin! They are filled with Vitamin A. Broccoli is a power food and is great with light dressing if you absolutely can’t stand the taste. There are so many ways to eat healthy!

    Remember, our spiritual health is also vital for continual growth and to remain close to God! We need the Bible and prayer to keep us connected to the source, God.

     I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5).
