As a college student, you must focus on your calling and vision and hone in on what you are most passionate about. Some people don’t know what they want to do, and college is an experiment of trying different career options; others have known since they were very young. If you are one of those people who just doesn’t know what you want to do for your career, I recommend you pray first.
Prayer always brings clarity and helps guide us, as well as giving us godly counsel and the Word of God. We must focus on what Jesus wants us to do, not what WE want to do. We must focus on God’s mission and task for us. Below are some pointers and highlights that you can take as a sign of what you are to do with your life.
For one, you will know what you are called to when you have empathy or sympathy for something you really care for. This can be a cause or this can be something that you are very zealous about or can be something you want to change in the world.
Second, this goes hand-in-hand with the first pointer, but do something you are PASSIONATE about.
Third, be open to different career options. Sometimes we think we want to do something full time and we end up doing something in a similar field that is just as rewarding.
Next, you want to do something you have been trained in, are naturally gifted at or where your strengths are. For example, if you are not good with speaking in front of people, don’t apply for a broadcasting job or position, unless you want to work BEHIND the camera. Don’t get involved in the health and medical field if you can’t stand hospitals, and so forth. Basically, DON’T waste your time studying something and spending thousands of dollars on what you won’t finish.
Don’t go in other people’s lanes or compare others’ callings to yours. It is important to focus on what God calls you to. For example, I felt the Lord guiding me to a Christian university and to study journalism, but I didn’t fully understand why God wanted me to major in communications. God had big plans for me on the horizon for Christian television, radio and even journalism. I didn’t see that at the time, but knew I loved to read, write, be in front of the camera and loved writing for the school newspaper. Who would have thought I would work with my best friend, and write for her website?! Who would have thought I would be able to host on christian television for the Hillsong Channel, JUCE TV, and TBN? I know more is coming and I cannot wait to see how God’s plan unfolds. God’s ways are higher and greater, especially when we seek Him first, trust and obey Him.
God has big things in store for you, so just trust Him one day at a time. Get in front of a school counselor or guide, or mentor, who can help you discern your calling or mandate on the earth. Ask your youth pastors or parents to assist you in your decision of career moves. In addition, look back on your life and think about what you dreamed of being when you were a kid. Sometimes your childhood can reveal a lot about who you are and what you naturally are wired to do.
PI Girls, we are praying for you and believe in who God created you to be. Don’t worry about comparison or if you don’t know yet what you want to do. Walk with Christ daily and work hard, and He will help guide you! God bless you.
