I’m Losing My Faith…How Do I Overcome Unbelief?

Project Inspired started a group specifically for the Girl Talk questions, which typically come from the Girl Talk chat wall on Facebook.

This week, a PI Girl asked for advice, as she is losing her faith. She feels like she is doing her part by going to church, reading the Bible and praying, but is still losing hope. She said that for the past two years she feels she has been tested over and over, and is at the end of her rope. What can she do?

The Bible says that when we cover our minds with the truth and wear the full armor of God (Ephesians 6), after we do our part we must simply STAND on God’s Word and truth (Matthew 7:24).

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to STAND. (Ephesians 6:13)

God’s Word is full of hope, life, truth and power. We must believe what we are reading, what we are speaking and what we are asking God for. The Bible says that when we doubt, we are double minded and are like the waves of the oceans blown and tossed to and fro.

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. (James 1:6)

If we come to our Father with a request and keep going back and forth, unsure if He is actually giving us this gift…well, wouldn’t that be strange to do that with our earthly Father? The same goes for our Heavenly Father regarding trusting Him and His goodness. Our Abba Father wants to bless us, protect us and show us His grace. If we doubt Him, it’s almost insulting. The Bible says, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11)

In the Word of God, there’s a story where a man asked Jesus for healing and the Lord rebuked him for doubting. The man repented and then asked for God to help his unbelief. We too must ask the Lord when we are struggling to increase our faith and to remove all doubt. Unbelief is displeasing to God, and He wants us to receive the Kingdom joyfully and not with fear.

Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

Five Ways to Overcome Doubt and Stand on Faith

1. Stand on God’s Word (Ephesians 6:13).

2. Believe without wavering and remove doubt (James 1:6).

3. Ask God to remove your unbelief (Mark 9:24).

4. Ask your Heavenly Father confidently in faith (Matthew 7:11).

5. Trust in God’s Word and His promises.

Remember, Project Inspired girls, that when we are tested and tried in the fire, it is actually a compliment—we are truly blessed because we know we are being sharpened and will come forth like gold. We know the Word says that the testing of our faith produces perseverance and then it grows into Godly character (James 1:3-4).

Of course waiting is not easy and testing is not comfortable, but we will get to that next level and will go from faith to faith and glory to glory, amen?
