Joey King Is Pretty in Pastels and We Give One Star a Makeover!

Ladies, modest clothing doesn’t have to mean frumpy. I think I’ve proved this in these MIH posts! It just may take a little longer to find modest clothes these days…especially when peek-a-boo designs, backless tops and micro-minis are all the rage!

But dressing modestly is worth doing because as Christians, we are called to glorify God in everything we do, and this includes how we dress. Out bodies are not our own (1 Corinthians 6:19). I pray that these posts are helpful when it comes to choosing clothes that are modest.

Now let’s get to this week’s selection!

Maddie-Hasson

Maddie Hasson

This dress is lovely! I adore the pattern, shape and length. It’s very classic, feminine and perfectly modest!

joey-king-

Joey King

I love the pastel colors and the pattern of this dress. The shape and length are great are both pretty and modest, and the embellished bands at the top and waist are a lovely touch.

ryan-newman-

Ryan Newman

How adorable is this dress?! I love the colorful gems on the bodice, contrasted with the plain chiffon skirt. It reminds me of a dancer’s dress. So cute!!!

anna-camp

Anna Camp

While I love white dresses with lace enhancements, the open front of this dress is just too revealing. The length of the skirt is also too short. If the front was closed and if the dress hit the top of the knee, this dress would be more modest.

Poll

Which of our three modest looks is your favorite?

Okay girlies, i Just have to point out something here…
I notice that some girls always see the “immodest dress” and say that they dont think its immodest or that they would even wear it, that theres nothing wrong with it.
But i would just like to remind you girls that when we judge the modesty of something, it is not wise to judge it based on what YOU as a female think. Many outfits that we see as cute/pretty, guys would look at it on a girl and lust. We must think from a males perspective, cuz that is who we are trying to keep from stumbling. When you judge an outfits modesty, look at it and say, could this outfit lead a guys eyes to my theighs/cleavage/butt/privates or not? That is the question.
And also, you can be fully covered, bearing no skin and still cause a guy to lust if your clothes are tight enough.

I only like the third one. 🙂

Well, the first one is modest, and the second one happens to be, but only for someone that’s really thin/tiny, like her.
I disagree about the third one though… It’s really not long enough, and it poofs out, so if she were to bend over the whole dress would stick straight up…Definitely not modest.
It also has a sweetheart neckline, which draws attention to that area, and the lines on the bust make the outline of a bra. Some dresses like this that I have seen actually have wire in them, so the top part is basically an underwire bra, and you can see it from the shape from the outside. Not something that I would ever wear.

I think Maddie’s dress is cute, but if I wore a dress like that around where I live, people would think I was Mennonite 🙂

Ah! I’m usually not at all a girly dressy person but Ryan’s dress is absolutely gorgeous!! 😀

Joey king!! Love her and her consistently modest style! 🙂

Hm…Ryan’s dress reminds me of my show choir dress! Except half of the girl’s dresses were hot pink and the other half were blue (my profile photo is from the show last year). The skirt doesn’t do the “umbrella effect”, which was great 😀 (when we did turns in other skirts, our skirts would fly up…but no so much with the stiffer fabric on the “ballerina skirt”)

    1. I love Maddie, but not this dress. She is amazing in Twisted! I like the style of the dress, and the fit of it, but the pattern is just ewwww. It reminds me of my grandma’s curtains or something.

    2. Joey King is always adorable. I’m very indifferent with this dress. I love the style of it but the pattern, I either love it or hate it. I look at it, I love it. I look at it again, I hate it. And then the pattern continues

    3. I have never heard of Ryan. I honestly am not a fan of this dress at all. The beading on it is gorgeous but I’ve always hated those dresses where its very ballerina-ish at the bottom. Most of the time they are very short, which is what probably normally shies me away and yet hers is not too short but I just don’t like it.

    4. I honestly have to say my favorite dress is Anna’s. I love the pattern, I love the style. Yes I do agree the neckline maybe too far. I think if it wouldn’t go so far on the stomach and would have stopped at the chest area it would be gorgeous. This is a dress I would totally wear. I don’t believe the length is that bad, maybe just a bit longer it would be good since I am tall.

Honestly I don’t think that Ryan Newman dress is any more modest than Anna Camps!!! At last Anna Camp dress is covering her arms some what even if it does swoop down in the middle.

The first two just look like curtain fabric. I just really don’t like them. They’re kinda old ladyish. The third redeemed the frumpy ones though! It’s exactly my style.

I have to agree with Eurydice on the modest makeovers. They’re just not beneficial. By showing us what is modest, we can build good standards for ourselves. I sincerely believe that one more modest dress instead would be SUCH an encouragement.

I agree with everything you said! Also, this may make me sound odd referring to psychology during my summer holiday, there are many psychologists that say that punishment may actually do more harm than good. Though we aren’t “punishing” the immodest dress/dressers per se, it can easily be misconstrued that way. Just my two cents 🙂

I’m a Psychology major; do you mind if I make a few comments? 🙂 You’re right, punishment can do more harm than good in some cases. However, there is a difference between negative reinforcement and punishment: negative reinforcement is NOT punishment.

Negative reinforcement is encouraging an action by providing something the subject does not want around. For example, some cars beep until the driver buckles up. To stop the annoying beeping, the driver buckles his or her seat belt. The reward was making the beeping stop. Positive reinforcement is the exact opposite: encouraging an action by having an incentive or some kind of reward in mind (for example, kids doing chores to receive allowance).

In my opinion, these Modest is Hottest posts are not punishing the featured celebrities but they are negatively reinforcing us (and positively reinforcing!) to dress modestly by showing us good and bad examples. By seeing the modest clothes we can be encouraged to dress like that knowing we look both cute and modest. By providing examples of immodest clothes, we are able to compare them to our own wardrobe and if they are too similar to be considered modest, we will be negatively reinforced by being reminded over and over again that it might be time for a change in the way we dress.

Providing both positive and negative reinforcement is the best way to encourage people to do what’s right. From the point of view of a psychologist in training (and from my own personal perspective), I fully support these posts.

I LOVE #1! It is vintage looking, yet gorgeous and classy! I love the collar, so cute! #2 is nice, but I wouldn’t wear it without a cardigan. Joey King is such a sweet young lady to watch! I loved her in Ramona and Beezus! #3 is ADORABLE! I would wear it hitting the knee, but otherwise, gorgeeous!!!! 😀 Number 4 is not only immodest, but it is really… honestly… ugly. It is very un-classy and not very pretty. Loving the picks this week!

Posted by PolkaDot on August 12, 2013 at 15:43

I don’t really like any of these. And I feel that the third one wasn’t all that modest. I mean, it spaghetti strap and it is a little short. Same thing with the second, but that is just my opinion.

    1. I like the shape of this one, but I am really put off the dress by its pattern and colours. I have a dress with a similar square neckline and I find it quite flattering. I’d usually choose a dress this length too. 4/10

    2. I do like the shape of this dress, and I think the neck and waist embellishments are really pretty, but I hate the colours! I think the pattern is a bit too much considering the embellishments, and the split is odd. 5/10

    3. LOVELOVELOVE! She looks beautiful! I love the colourful bodice! The chiffon skirt is beautiful. I wouldn’t usually consider white (too bridal), but this is lovely? However, I think that the spaghetti straps and the bodices cut might be uncomfortable on a woman with a larger chest, and may be considered “immodest” by so, some people. 8/10

    4. I HATE lace and pastel colours, so this is possibly everything I hate in a dress. I don’t like the sleeves, front, the cut or anything really. I could go on.. ugh. 3/10

I’m a little curious as to why you aren’t a fan of them. I’ve seen you post of them for several weeks now and I always wondered why. Like I get you find them “offensive” but why are they?

      • Eurydice

First of all, I absolutely love the concept of “Modest Is Hottest.” It’s a fantastic idea, and I’m sure it’s very encouraging to PI members. However, I think the “Modest Makeovers” turn the whole thing on its head. I have a thread under Real Beauty concerning my issue with the “Makeovers” for further explanation.

Euridice, if you’re in the minority, and nearly everyone else likes them, them why should they go away? This world would be a big white void if everything “offensive” to anyone was taken out of it.
