Katy Perry’s Wrist Tattoo

Nicole has already talked about Katy Perry, a former Christian who delivers a not-so-Christian message through her music. She has also discussed tattoos and why they aren’t necessarily a good idea. Katy Perry has a few tattoos, but for this article, I wanted to focus on a particular tattoo on her wrist that reads, “Jesus.”

Katy grew up in California with Christian parents who were very strict. Listening to her music, it’s hard to believe that as a young girl she was only permitted to listen to gospel music. Now all grown up, her music and style definitely do not reflect her Christian roots. She hasn’t completely abandoned her past, though. She chose to have “Jesus” tattooed on her wrist. In an interview with Katie Couric, she said that when she sees the tattoo she thinks, “Remember, you came from this and you can always go back to it.”

A tattoo is a permanent, personal decision. It’s true that it’s a decision that you may very well regret in the future. Katy may be a bad influence on young girls now, but there is no doubt that she once had a close relationship with God. We can only hope that she goes back to her roots and starts to use her influence to help spread a more positive message.

She also said that she had her own relationship with Christ. I pray that she will learn that she really does need God in her life more than He is now

I do pray that Katy will go back to her Christian roots, but not necessarily in music. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t want her to sing more music like “Dark Horse” (please, “Firework” and “Roar” were her two best songs), but Christian music nowadays is so generic. Even Chris Tomlin and TobyMac are joining the crowd. If she could keep the same music style she has, make more clean songs, and maybe throw in a Christian track or two, I would be perfectly happy. 🙂

I agree about her message, and although I like Katy as an artist I and even though she doesn’t have to do Christian music, I still wish she would make songs for the kids and teens that she targets. As for her tattoo, it is her choice as an adult. I wouldn’t mind having Jesus on my wrist forever, but I personally don’t fully agree with tattoos. However, she is a grown woman who is like 30 now and she should be able to make her own choices, as long as they are guided and wise.

She wants to be free. She’s sick and tired of being controlled by her parents and being unhappy… Maybe she just doesn’t believe what her parents does. I mean how would you feel if you are christian and was pushed to believe only Buddhism. You would feel very unhappy, wouldn’t you? And Christianity is about respecting everyone else and having love for them, regardless of who they are. Otherwise you are not a true Christian because there is hate in your heart. Only God can judge so you have no right to tell people what is right and wrong. Katy Perry has a good heart, we all go through tough times where we get “lost”. Don’t we??? jeez…

I feel like she got lost trying to be famous. She would have been a beautiful Christian musician, and I know that even though she is a bit lost, I feel like she hasn’t completely abandoned God, and I hope she will continue to chug on, and eventually find Jesus in her heart.

I am very sad to see what happened to katy, she got swept up into the worlds ways and forgot her love for Jesus she needs to return to her first love which is Jesus. I do hope God reachess out to her, I dont know if she is saved or if she was a name tag christian or not, but I do hope God saves her if she isnt saved! If she is saved and just really fallen back into sin I pray that God will go after her like the shepard went after his lost sheep.

btw I think wide awake her song has a double meaning, yes about her bad marriage but also about how fame and fortune has brought her heart ache and she needs to get off cloud 9 with the world and be aware of wat satans darts are trying to do. I think she is starting to realize but then runs back to fame, sadly…. She says God knows that I tried seeing the bright side I am not blind anymore, shes trying to figure life out and she knows God probably knows shes trying to see the bright side of fame but its looking dark now after all that has happened. Thats my take on the song. Listen to the lyrics, think she is starting to see how much she has strayed.

I think her music is fine and I like it, especially Firework. That one makes me believe that I’m beautiful, even if I know hundreds of people who think differently.

My friend’s mom (who is Protestant) and I am Catholic told her daughter and I that if I get a tattoo I am making myself an idol. Is that true? Please respond back! – Monica

    • Posted by Nicole on August 31, 2011 at 23:24

getting a tattoo isn’t meaning your an idol necessarily, but it’s a permanent life-long choice, and I wouldn’t get one personally. Hope that helps!

  10. Posted by on August 31, 2011 at 12:23

I have a question-I got a second ear piercing so I can wear hoops and studs at the same time. Is that bad? Am I making myself an idol? I heard that if you get a tattoo you are making yourself an idol. Is that true? Please make an article about this! I am panicking right now! -Monica

    I love Katy Perry.

  12. Posted by on July 23, 2011 at 14:27

what’s wrong with enjoying your life, having great sex, having fun etc. ? And what’s good about having really strict Christian parents and you can’t do things you really like? I’m sorry but I just don’t understand things like that. I agree with some of your articles ( the ones about Lady Gaga being satanic ) but some of them I think are kind of exaggerated. I just think you can’t judge people when you don’t know them in person. Sorry I don’t want to upset you, it just bothered me a little ! 🙂 But thanks for making people aware of the disturbing things Lady Gaga does, more people should see that!

Sorry if my English is bad, by the way. 🙂

    • Posted by Nicole on July 25, 2011 at 23:37

your english is perfect Nora! 🙂 Thank you for writing me with your thoughts, I really appreciate it! Have a blessed day gorgeous. 😀

I pray that Katy does find God again. But the thing is, God said He forgives when people sincerely turn away from their former life. I hope Katy realizes that she can’t just go to God and ask for fire insurance and expect God to be satisfied. I’m praying for you Katy!

  14. Posted by on July 9, 2011 at 18:31

I pray that she goes back to those old roots!

  15. Posted by on July 9, 2011 at 11:07

Such a pity that God gave her such a talent and instead of glorifying God with it, she uses it to sing about nasty things. =[

  16. Posted by on July 8, 2011 at 17:59

Also, however, the bible states not to tatoo yourself. Literally, it reads ‘Do not tatoo your self’ Also “Do not peorce your skin” Tatoos peirce your skin. And just to throw it in, it says “In times of grief, do not mark your skin.” So to all you cutters, the bible says not to! turn to him And he will help you!

Off topic, but the main thing i wanted to point out was the bible is againt tatoos

    • Posted by on July 26, 2011 at 08:13

yes the bible says this but it also says not to trim the hair on your temples or on your chin(Leviticus 27). have you had your hair cut recently? God says this to set His people apart from the rest of the world, people, who in those days used tattoos to indulge in pagan worship and witchcraft. getting a tattoo now is completely fine if you have the right intentions. You should look at Romans 14 before you decide that tattoos are “evil” and “forbidden”

      • Posted by on August 29, 2011 at 15:27

We are focusing on tattoos here, it is wrong, I learned it in Christian ed along with about 13 other people, it is permanent and the only way to get it off is with an expensive and painful surgery and sometimes even then it doesn’t come off.

  17. Posted by on July 8, 2011 at 07:59

I found this quote from the internet:

“I got this Jesus tattoo on my wrist when I was 18 because I know that it’s always going to be a part of me. When I’m playing, it’s staring right back at me, saying, ‘Remember where you came from.’” – Katy Perry

Well…if its perminately on her now, then shouldn’t she look at it and get a good taste of how original and pure and good she was?

  18. Posted by on July 8, 2011 at 06:18

what the stew! How dare she hae his name on her arm! How dare she insult JESUS!

    • Posted by on July 15, 2011 at 09:08

she’s not insulting him, in fact quite the contrary!!!! she has this tattoo to remember where she came from!!! i say that she misses Jesus, but she loves the fame and fortune so much that she thinks she can’t go back. it’s truely sad!!!! but her song “who am i living for” i think is a sign that she might be on her way back!!!:)

  19. Posted by on July 7, 2011 at 10:12

Katy Perry deffinetly isn’t a Christian artist, BUT you should listen to “Who Am I Living For?” on her album “Teenage Dream.” It really is a Christian song, biblical refrences and all! If she started recording songs like that, she might not be as famous in a Hollywood way, but tons more Christian would listen to her music. “Firework” is also pretty good.

  20. Posted by on July 6, 2011 at 12:01

It’s sad that she’s made such a wrong turn in life. I know a lot of people don’t think of this, but we should pray for celebrities like her who are going the wrong way in life, or went astray from their roots.

  21. Posted by on July 5, 2011 at 12:10

The good thing about God is that when you stray away from him,he always brings you back if you let him.

(Proverbs 22:6) Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it

    • Posted by on August 3, 2011 at 12:09

YES! I pray for Beyonce and Katy Perry allll the time! I believe God can always bring them Back!

    • Posted by on July 27, 2011 at 16:10

      AMEN! ;D

  22. Posted by on July 5, 2011 at 10:46

I was watching her biography on E! and she said that when she first started out that Christian music wasn’t working for her and thats why she went to secular music. If I could talk to her I would say that maybe she wasn’t patient enough and that if she stayed with Christian music that God would give her so much more blessings and that she wouldn’t feel empty inside and need to fill the emptiness with parties and trying to be “cool”.

    • Posted by Nicole on July 5, 2011 at 11:00

I agree, I think you’re completely right. She definitely should of waited longer instead of changing who she is.

  23. Posted by on July 5, 2011 at 06:45

When I hear her music, I can just tell that she’s sort of lost in the whole music industry. I hope she can get back to God.

  24. Posted by on July 5, 2011 at 06:20

    completely agree!
