Laura Carmichael Models a Mid-Calf Dress and We Match Last Week’s Modest Favorite!

Hey ladies, modesty often gets such a bad rap, right? Often, when Christians are called to dress modestly, their first instinct is to imagine themselves wearing a burlap bag. I pray that these Modest Is Hottest posts are proof that you can dress modestly while looking pretty!

This week, I thought it would be fun to feature mid-calf skirts and dresses. While modest in length, this style can look awkward…but check out the following examples for feminine, chic mid-calf looks done well!

And don’t forget to check out last week’s winner of our modesty matchup!

Laura Carmichael

I love this strapless forest green dress. Although simple in design, the overall look is enhanced by the embellishments in the fabric. I also love how the bodice is shaped as a curve to cover cleavage.

Sandra Bullock

Such a cute outfit combo! The mid-calf pencil skirt is a beautiful emerald color with a muted filigree pattern. And how fun is that t-shirt? This is such a chic look!

Usun Yoon

The length of this dress comes a little higher than that of a traditional mid-calf dress…perfect for those with shorter legs. The dress hits right below the knee and the belt sits a little higher on the waist, creating the illusion of a longer skirt. And I love the fun addition of the train.

Now for our modest matchup!

carrie Underwood and mike Fisher

Carrie Underwood

Last week, Carrie Underwood’s tulle overlay dress won our Modest Is Hottest poll, so I went in search of a similar dress that could help you get her look!

How about this pretty dress? It shares the same overlay feature, as well as the sleeveless and fit-and-flare design, of Underwood’s gown. This dress can be worn as a fun summer party dress, and also would be perfect for graduation! What do you think?

Which of our three modest looks is your favorite?

I didn’t really think the top one was that modest… it was a little low for my taste.

They were all kind of ugly… except C.U’s

I don’t really like the color but it’s pretty:) and number 3 has to be my favorite! And I love the dress you found that is similar to Carrie underwoods!

I think the first dress could be more modest, but it is pretty. Personally, I don’t like the look of strapless dresses. They aren’t very feminine… But #3, LOVE IT!

I don’t mean to be rude at all but I am just curious…why do you think that strapless isn’t feminine? I mean, you don’t see guys going around wearing strapless clothes;) lol

I’m actually a big fan of the mid-calf dresses; it’s perfect length to me. But it always seems the style of the top never matches the bottom, making the dress look awkward. I’m not sure what style would make it look better…maybe an off-shoulder sleeve? But anyways…yeah. I like the first dress, but not the bodice/top of it.

I am not a major fan of any of this week’s outfits, though #1 is definitely my favorite. It would be greatly improved in my opinion if she wore a shawl or little jacket or something to that effect.
I adore the modest matchup! I would totally get this- but this week it doesn’t say where it can be bought……. :/ does anyone know?

All of them are too long, I don’t like that length, the first 2 colors and patterns aren’t cute, the shirt on number 2 would be perfect with a pair of black skinny jeans and heels. Number 3 looks funny, you cant wear it out anywhere out and it looks like it is wrinkled and needs to be ironed. I don’t like any of these. You should really look somewhere online for the clothes on here, then maybe they are affordable and natural, then they are cute too.

I didn’t like any of the dresses except for the last one- the overstock dress. That one is exactly my style and is so cute!

    1. This cut still looks awkward to me. It doesn’t do anything for her, the color/pattern is ugly, and the beads or sequins that are scattered throughout are kind of random. Although I do like the bodice, the rest is just too much to overlook.

    2. Better… But she really needs to pick a focal point of her outfit. Between her green printed skirt, graphic tee, necklaces that don’t compliment each other, and purse thats a cross between a clutch and a handbag, she looks like she blindly picked out her outfit. I do like the combination of a casual tee and dressed up pencil skirt (although the hem should be shortened) but that’s were my liking this outfit stops.

    3. This is the best look by far. This is how you should do a mid-calf dress. Fitted (like this one) or flared (like Ariana Grandes dress at the Grammys) not in between. I really like how she added the belt, not only because it’s a good accessory, but because it adds some subtle ruching that’s flattering for all body types. I would’ve changed the train to make it slimmer, or just taken it off completely. I also would have added some color or sparkle! Simple LBD’s are perfect canvases for colorful accessories. I would’ve done a crazy shoe, colorful belt, or traded the huge brown necklace for a colorful statement necklace that would be much more flattering.

Modest Matchup – Most of the time you have a knack for making the MM so much cuter than the actual dress! And that is definatley the case w/this one! My original complaint of the dress that it seemed a bit too Glinda the Good Witch for me…but this dress doesn’t feel like that at all!
