Modest Is Hottest! Kate Mara Is Modestly Chic and We Give One Star a Makeover!

Ladies, there’s nothing wrong with evaluating an outfit or dress to determine whether or not it’s modest. “Modest is Hottest” posts are not about the people wearing the dresses–they’re about the dresses and how they look on a body!

If you’re interested in modest fashion, check out these great outfit inspirations:

Holland Roden

This is a really fun dress! I love the high neck and cap sleeves of the embellished top. And the three contrasting layers of the skirt look so cool!

Anne Hathaway

A classic style can always be enhanced by a print. This dress is very simple and perfectly modest!

Kate Mara

This is such a stunning and elegant dress. It’s form-fitting without being too tight. I love the embellished top, and how it’s finished with a simple banded waist!

Jordin Sparks

Jordin! Your dress is too tight, too sheer and way too short. Girls, do you agree?

Do you think Jordin Sparks' dress needs an Inspired Makeover, or is it just right?

I think Roden’s dress would be expected on a young girl and a mandarin collar and increased length would improve it as far as fashion goes. Hathaway proves you can’t improve on something as classic as an a-line midi dress.

Her dress is not sheer. The light from all the camera flashes is hitting her large chest wrong and making it look like it is. Her top is just as solid as her bottom. I hope that the writer fixes this mistake at some point because it is really irking me.

I truly love Anne’s dress. very lovely design and is super modest!!! I feel that Jordan’s dress is a bit tight and sheer but the length isn’t all that bad.

What is up with all the pushing against this post? Everyone has an opinion, what Nicole is doing is not bashing against these women, she is showing us how to recognize modesty and immodesty. The standard for immodesty is not rules, the standard is Jesus. What would he say if he saw Jordin in that dress? If another man saw her in that dress would he be tempted to sin? These are the questions that should be asked. By the way these are by far my favorite posts! <3

Honestly I personally see the first three dresses as ugly and would not ever wear any of them willingly. Also, Jordan’s dress is actually not all that immodest. I realize that many of you would find her dress too immodest for YOU to wear but that is your own personal opinion. If any of you would actually look up the event where the picture was taken and look at other pictures you would see that the top is actually not see through (which seems to be the common complaint). The top is no more see through than the skirt is. The reason you think it is is because that particular picture reflects the light wrong AND she is actually wearing a white bra. That is the only problem with it.

I am personally thinking of ending my account on here because all I see is a bunch of opinionated people pushing judging standards on others, and this website endorses that. Especially these “Modest is Hottest” columns. I do not understand them and I honestly do not think they are honoring or glorifying to God. I get the fact about showing modest dresses but I do not understand the reason for showing immodest ones and practically tearing down the person by saying “oh we are so disappointed in so and so,” and “This dress is way immodest girls, DON’T YOU AGREE?” I have a problem with that.
I understand that we need to be critical in regards to how we present Christ. But I think this column would be much more effective if it showed “look at this modest cute dress we found,” instead of doing what it does now. Because in all actuality, we KNOW what immodesty looks like because we see it all the time. So when you present it here it just opens it up for people to be opinionated and judgmental. What kind of a witness is that? Not one that I want to be a part of that is for sure.
I am saved by grace. Grace, it is not what you do or what you wear, but once a person is saved they will start to have the desire to be like Christ. This column misses the point for it tries to judge these people by a standard they do not meet. To be a witness one has to meet a person where they are and bring them up; not try to push on them a standard that they cannot meet.

I’m sorry this is long but this has been weighing on me for a long time.

I agree, I think it would be better to just show us the modest dresses.

And I really did not think there was something wronge with Jordans dress. I wouldent were it but, because it’s not my style not beacuse it’s immodest.

You know…PI keeps claiming it’s not about the person wearing the dress, but the comments under the “immodest” pictures sound rather “scold-y” to me. I don’t think we have the right to do that.

    • misstake

Posted by misstake on February 7, 2013 at 05:44

you comment sounds rather “scold-y” too… The bible says we are to judge whether things are pure or not. That’s all they are doing. They didnt criticize Jordin at all. They just simply commented on her dress. How many times do we comment on the way someone is dress? (it doesnt have to be just on modesty, but whether we like it or not as well. right?) 🙂

Well then don’t read theses posts! Hahaha I’m sorry, but honestly, If you don’t agree with what they are doing, then why work yourself up abut it? Instead of trying to change 99% of the sights opinion, if you don’t agree with what they are doing then don’t read these posts just to get angry about them. I love these posts and think they are very useful!

      • Eurydice

Posted by Eurydice on February 7, 2013 at 17:47

There is a difference between saying whether you like something or not and saying whether something is acceptable or not. The latter is under the assumption you have the authority to say so, and I don’t think PI has that authority.

I loved the last two dresses, and the bottom half of the first dress (The top half was weird looking…It looked like it belonged on a different dress than the bottom half).
I love Anne Hathaway, but I think her dress is weird, not very flattering.

  19. bethluvstheafters

Posted by bethluvstheafters on February 4, 2013 at 22:33

I didn’t actually think taht Jordan’s was all that bad other than a few inches that needs to be added on and make the top less see thru (or tight). So yeah, I’d say its more one of those dresses that needs a “little” makeover rather than a revamp like some of the ones posted on here. The thing about that dress though that I really hate, is that its just NOT flattering on her! There are ways of wearing black clothing that make you look thinner, but this is not one of them!

  21. PolkaDot

Posted by PolkaDot on February 4, 2013 at 18:38

Jordins dress is just too short and to form fitting! Which is sad because if she got those to facotrs right it would be a stunning dress!

    • PolkaDot

      • Project Inspired

Posted by on February 4, 2013 at 20:35

I believe it is only see through under the bright flash of a camera. Even if you can see her chest, that would be on her for not wearing a black bra or cami, the dress isnt at fault.

  23. christina21

    Posted by christina21 on February 4, 2013 at 17:40

I disagree with the “immodest” pick. Come on! I don;t think Jordin’s dress is immodest at all! To be honest, I love her dress and I’d definitely wear it. But I’d cover up the sheerness of her dress because it shows her boobs. Other than that, I’d so wear it.

  24. Project Inspired

Posted by KaylaHansa on February 4, 2013 at 16:44

For everyone saying how the dress is modest… not to be rude but YOU CAN SEE HER BOOBS. How can a dress be modest if your entire boobs are showing? Sure, it’s only semi-sheer but I’m pretty sure a man cannot control himself around that.

    • hockeychick20

      Posted by hockeychick20 on February 7, 2013 at 07:20

Kayla, we all have booobs, again she’s curvier than the other girls in these pictures so it shows more with her than if Ann Hathaway was wearing the same thing. I don’t think it’s see through it’s the light reflecting off the black. Also, as someone who has multiple older brothers, I would like to say that not all guys drool over girls like that and I really don’t like it when people make guys out to be that way because I wouldn’t want someone to say that about my brothers 😉

      • Eurydice

Posted by Eurydice on February 7, 2013 at 19:35

Some guys have foot fetishes. Are you going to stop wearing sandals just in case a guy sees your toes and might have “inappropriate thoughts?” Yeah…I didn’t think so…

      • Project Inspired

Posted by KaylaHansa on February 7, 2013 at 18:30

Of course, not all guys. But for the ones that do… there’s guys that are stumbled by girls dressing like that and they try really hard not to commit adultery in the heart because that is a serious sin but it is really, really hard for them. If you do a little bit of research you’ll see. Unless you wear a tank top, you can catch the light in that dress and show A LOT.

  26. Project Inspired

Posted by Joliela on February 4, 2013 at 15:53

The rule at my church as always no shorter than fingertips and Jordins doesn’t really break that, so.

also she is far curvier than all the other girls you compared her to, almost any dress will flatter that figure unless she wears and potato sack.

  27. Carnation

Posted by Carnation on February 4, 2013 at 15:33

I personally love Anne Hathaway! She always wears modest dresses and is very friendly. I don’t think Jordin’s dress was immodest, really. She doesn’t look immodest. Ok it’s a little short, but she doesn’t look immodest at all in it!! Just my opinion!

  28. Project Inspired

I love the bottom three dresses, but I’m not digging the top one. I really appreciate that you responded to some of the concerns that girls had expressed, but what I wonder is: if it is about the dress and not the person, why wouldn’t you just show a dress from a catalog or a website? I love the first 3/4 of these posts, but I just don’t see the point in calling someone out for being immodest.

    • vanilla

Posted by vanilla on February 4, 2013 at 18:07

I agree; I don’t really see the point in showing an immodest dress too. A lot of people comment on if the last dress is or isn’t modest instead of admiring the modest picks.

It’s to show us what an inmodest outfit look like, and to help us see the difference between modest an inmodest.

I feel like too many Christians focus on the list of DO NOTs, rather than the DOs. Can’t we change that? Encouraging certain behaviors instead of shaming others?

    • Eurydice

Posted by Eurydice on February 4, 2013 at 14:45

  29. AllisonGrace

Posted by AllisonGrace on February 4, 2013 at 13:45

To be honest, I love Jordin’s dress. It’s a bit short, but I like it. The other ones just aren’t quite my style, although they are very pretty. I do like the first one, but I feel like the fit of the top is kind of… off? Maybe it’s just me. Anyways, I think Jordin rocked it!

  30. InspiredGirl123

    Posted by InspiredGirl123 on February 4, 2013 at 11:43

*sigh* Jordin’s dress really isn’t bad at all. It only goes a little above the knees and it’s not really immodest at all. Anne’s dress is so preety :O But there’s really nothing wrong with Jordin’s dress 😛

    • bethluvstheafters

Posted by bethluvstheafters on February 4, 2013 at 22:29

Other than the dress being a little too short and the chest a little sheer i think it was pretty modest… other than it is just NOT flattering on her! So yeah, I think its a dress that could use a “little” makeover this time rather than a huge revamp like some of the celeb dresses I’ve seen.

    • applebypie123

      Posted by applebypie123 on February 4, 2013 at 13:07

I think the length isnt nearly as much of a problem as the sheerness on her chest! You can see like her entire boobs.

Love Love Love Hathaway’s dress. So pretty. The colors are beautiful. The third dress is good too. I actually like Jordin’s dress. It flatters her figure very well, plus the lace arm in so pretty. Sure I wouldn’t wear it because of the length, but she doesn’t look unmodest at all in it. Plus she’s following the popular rule of making sure your length is at or past your finger tips. I think she’s pretty modest comparatively to others. You can agree or disagree, im only stating my opinion.

I agree, the sleeves are kinda pretty. I probably couldn’t pull it off, haha, but she can. I wish it was just a few inches longer, and maybe not so tight.
