Modest Is Hottest: Oscars Edition–Jennifer Lawrence Wins Again!

Ladies, did you watch the Oscars? I love to check out the red carpet fashion! I was a little disappointed with much of the selection this year, but there were a few beautiful, modest gems that stood out to me!

Sandra Bullock

I adore dresses embellished in sequins and beads! This is a gorgeous and elegant dress that fits the body without stretching around the figure. The nude underdress reaches right above the knee, so it enhances the embellishments while keeping the dress modest.

While many fashion gurus placed this gown on their “worst dressed” lists, I beg to differ. Sure, it’s not Oscar elaborate, but it’s still a beautiful color and design. A modest classic!

Jennifer Lawrence

This was my favorite dress of the night. Although very much an ideal wedding dress, this modest gown’s gorgeous train was also very Oscar-worthy. Loved it! Congratulations to Jennifer for her Best Actress win!

Samantha Barks

While I love a simple black gown, I fear the plain design of Samantha’s dress brings too much attention to her chest, making it too immodest! Ladies, do you agree? Does this dress need a modest makeover?

Which of our three modest looks is your favorite?

In my opinion, Sandra Bullock’s dress is the only modest one, but that’s probably because strapless dresses make me feel uncomfortable.

Women (teen girls) should respect their body and how they cover it. All of the dresses are beautiful on them. They are all beautiful women. But does putting on a revealing dress make you anymore beautiful. No. God see’s the beauty within you.

I don’t like Aniston and Lawrence’s dresses, they are not appropriate for red carpet, sure, they’re are beautiful, but Lawrence’s dress is a wedding dress, not a red carpet dress, and Aniston’s is beautiful, but not for red carpet either. Sandra Bullock’s dress is perfectly modest, the color goes great with her hair, and the sheer skirt below the knees adds a little bit of sexiness that is appropriate for a woman her age.

The problem that I keep seeing with dresses with straps is that if they have straps they usually have a ridiculously low neckline. So I like these strapless dresses! I would wear all of them given the chance, well except, maybe, Samantha barks, and Sandra bullocks. 🙂

I liked Jessica Chastain, Amy Adams, Helen Hunt, Kerry Washington and even jennifer garners although it was a little over the top. I’ve actually seen LOTS of modest dresses from the Oscars! And reese witherspoon’s!! It was a little low, but still really cute! So was stacy keiblers, despite its backlessness:)

I like these articles except for the makeover part. I honestly always agree that the dresses are inappropriate but I feel like we shouldn’t dwell on those things. You these women are lost so we can’t expect them to act/dress like Christians do.
This site is an amazing way to get christian girls together so I don’t want to be saying that I disapprove of it or its articles but could you maybe just do these articles with the clean dresses and skip out on the indecent ones?
    Just food for thought. ^_^

Have you ever wondered what the guys around you really think about the issue of modesty? Would you like to be able to pick their brain about what they think is ok and what isn’t? There’s a cause out there, the rebelution that has done a GREAT survey about what guys find immodest and what they find modest. I personally think it’s worth it for every girl to take a look at it, because it helps us understand how we’re being perceived when we dress one way vs. the other! http://www.therebelution.com/modestysurvey/browse

I watched the interviews on the red carpet before the ceremony and loved Jennifer’s dress immendiately when I saw it! I also adored Reese Witherspoon’s and Anne Hathaway’s dresses. As for the gowns shown here, Jennifer’s reminds me of a dreamy wedding dress, although it looks like it’s falling down in the photo shown here. I like the other two modest dresses but Jennifer’s is my favorite! Did anyone hear about her tripping on the skirt while walking onto the stairs leading to the stage to receive her award? Maybe next year she’ll pick a somewhat shorter dress haha 🙂 Samantha has the body to go with that dress, but I feel like people’s eyes didn’t go to her pretty face first!

And did you see how many articles were written about it? In terms of Jennifer Lawrence, I never once saw an article about how lovely she looked, or what a great actress she is, all I heard was her fall. Can you imagine how embarrassing that must be for her, to be remembers that way for the night she won an Oscar?

Also, as a side note, I really appreciate the voting change, about voting on favorites. That is neat!! 🙂 I liked seeing all the Les Mis stars there but I shall admit, I was completely shocked with Samantha’s dress choice :/ You live and you learn I suppose.

I wasn’t really that impressed with any of the Dresses this year. If I had to choose one it would be either Jessica Chastain’s or Charlize Theron’s dress. I’m not a fan of beading on dresses so I didn’t like Sandra Bullock’s. The first thing that pops in my head is “Vegas” which is cheap looking. Jennifer Aniston’s was a beautiful color but too plain and prom style looking. Jennifer Lawrence – too Bridal for me and not loving the pattern. Samantha’s screams way too sexy and definitely not elegant.

First off, I LOVE all those beautiful, elegant, fashionable gowns worn at the Oscars/Gammys/AMA/ect. The selection of outfits picked by everyone was, overall, pretty good, concerning modesty. I know some of you guys are really bashing the two Jennifer’s for going strapless, but not everyone really wants to dress like their from the 1800’s. Like Joliela mentioned earlier, it’s only sexual if you make it sexual. I really think the both, and others (i.e. Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon, Amy Adams and Amanda Seyfried with her red dress), did a marvelous job with keeping it fairly modest in my opinion.
I do agree with most of you talking about Samantha Barks’ dress, though. A little too much cleavage showing, but it was her choice to wear it and she was still absolutely stunning.

  23. AllisonGrace

Posted by AllisonGrace on February 26, 2013 at 07:54

Call me crazy, but I think there were so many that were beautiful and modest. Maybe I like a little more glam, but these were the nice, plain ones. There were definitely better ones. Jennifer Aniston’s is probably my favorite, it just needed accessories. Selma Hayek had a BEAUTIFUL glam dress that was modest, as did Octavia and Queen Latifah. I’d love to see some of the modest curvier females on here, and less of the “Oh let’s give this girl a makeover, she’s not up to standard!”

Posted by Joliela on February 25, 2013 at 19:28

I don’t understand the hate on strapless dresses in the comments. Theres nothing inherently sexy about shoulders when all it is, is the top of your arm. Its only over sexual because you’re making it sexual. It would be different if the dress were strapless causing lots of cleavage, but they aren’t.

    • KPriorify

Posted by KPriorify on March 10, 2013 at 13:24

The only issue with strapless dresses is like with everything, people abuse them. Women wear them too low, too tight, too see through etc, etc. I have a strapless dress that covers ALL OF MY BOOBS. And I would be comfortable in it if Jesus walked in the room right then and there.

    • misstake

Posted by misstake on February 27, 2013 at 07:59

its not the shoulders part that I find immodest, but the fact that her dress may fall down! there is nothing holding it up properly. And the top was too low in my opinion. Your chest should be covered with a bit to spare so you can bend over and not flash people. ^^

I agree that there is nothing wrong with wearing strapless dresses, but most girls aren’t comfortable wear them so straps are a cute jacket are fine to wear. I mean i can’t even wear thin straps, but i will someday. We are all different, but one thing we can agree on is that we are all children of God. 🙂

I like your comment Joliela for you have a good point, people only seeing something as “sexy” because they make it out to be such. I actually think that many strapless dresses can be more “modest” then dresses with straps, for if it is well fitting then it stays up and there is no cleavage showing. I suppose it all depends on each individual’s own definition of modest though. That is something that really needs to be remembered though for many times people are really quick to say “oh that is way to immodest” immediately casting judgment on that person (intentionally or not) because they find it to immodest. You get what I’m saying? But yeah, I liked your comment! 🙂

I feel that way because of how I’ve been raised. The school tht I go to has given us guidelines for events and no shoulders is one of them. I haven’t ever had a chance to choose or not. And there’s a good chance I won’t for a few more years, so I’m setting my standards along there’s a bit I guess, so I can keep a good attitude. 🙂

It’s kind of weird, but i guess its just a style. Jennifer Aniston’s dress is gorgeous! I love that color so much. Altho I love bullock as an actress, I felt her dress was lacking anything I really liked.

I really like all three of the dresses that you’ve chosen this time around. They’re so pretty and elegant. I would love to be able to wear any of these! I believe that my favorite is Jennifer Lawrence’s. It’s so princessy, and I love it. Of course, I would wear any of these top three dresses. I have no problem with the strapless, although I probably wouldn’t wear it strapless myself. The reason is that I am usually afraid it will fall down so I end up pulling it up all the time, which looks tacky. I’d go with some clear straps.

I decided a while back that I was no longer going to post about the ‘immodest’ dresses. Not because I don’t agree with you, but because I don’t think there’s anything that needs to be said. In fact, I think these articles could be improved by simply leaving the ‘immodest’ dress off. I believe it would be a much better use of your time to JUST post some really pretty dresses that are modest. (Sure I don’t think we need to dress like the Amish do, but I agree that a little covering is classy.) Kind of to show us that there ARE stars out there who dress to the standards that we try to uphold. I don’t think it’s necessary to point out the people who don’t agree with us. Just a tip.

We’re not trying to be judgemental, T.M. is just trying to show us what kind of cool fashions that are modest that the celebs are wearing. I agree as well. I am a Christian, I love Jesus, and I consider myself to be a modest dresser. However, not everyone is a Christian (especially not in Hollywood), and it is a little ridiculous to expect non-Christians to act as Christians.

Besides that, I think strapless is very elegant. I know we all have different standards of modesty, but maybe we could all try to be a little more understanding. Samantha Barks is a beautiful, distinguished, and extremely talented young woman, and personally, I think what she wears is her choice. Us discussing giving her a “modest makeover” is frankly, quite insulting. It does not make Christianity look attractive; it only makes us look snobby.

This week, none of the dresses made my standards modesty. Number 1 is lovely. I love the pattern of the dress. The style is simple and beautiful. However, it is much too sheer to be modest in my opinion. Her legs are fully visible through the skirt. Number 2 is beautiful as well. I love the bright color and the full skirt. However, it is strapless. Number 3 is definitely my favorite. The color is beautiful and I love the skirt and train. I really wish I could give this dress my mark of approval, but it is strapless. Number four is lovely. I love the simple design. Plus, I’ve always liked black dresses. However, it’s neckline is too low. All in all, I love the colors of all of these dresses and think all of them are beautiful, but unfortunately none of them are what I’d consider modest.

I love the selection this week, but there was one gown that was way more immodest there! I love Jenifer’s and Jennifer’s especially! Like princess gowns! 🙂

I saw this quote on Pinterest the other day, and I think it is very true: “When a woman covers herself with modest clothing, she is not hiding herself from men, on the contrary, she is revealing her dignity to them.”
