My 2012 Oscar Fashion Favorites

With this year’s Oscars came the usual red carpet fashion show. I think that’s the best part for many viewers—at least, it is for me! Let’s have some fun and share our favorites.

I think that there were a lot of lovely dresses this year, but I did notice some standouts!

For most unique, I picked Kristen Wiig’s fun dress. Her strapless nude gown had a fitted bodice and featured chiffon ruffles for the skirt. I thought it was gorgeous and looked perfect on her.

For glamor, I selected both Milla Jovovich and Stacy Keibler. Both dresses shared very similar features: They were one shouldered, fitted without being too tight, and featured fishtails. But each dress had different overall effects. Jovovich’s heavily sequined white gown created a stunning shimmery look. Keibler’s Grecian-style metallic gold dress was the picture of elegance. And I loved how the material flowed in soft folds and swooped up into a “rose” design on the hip.

For simple but stunning, I picked Natalie Portman and Gwyneth Paltrow. Red is my favorite color, so Portman’s gown with black polka dots caught my eye. I thought it was very classic and chic. Paltrow’s ensemble was very modest, but so stylish. I thought this dress was perfect for her.

My absolute favorite dress was Penelope’s Cruz’s. She selected a style that didn’t fit the obvious trend on this year’s red carpet. You may have noticed all the strapless, fitted, fishtail styles. Not Penelope. She selected a beautiful flowing princess gown in a gorgeous blue. I loved it.

I’d have chosen Angelina Jolie’s black dress as a favorite–I thought it was lovely. But I was not a fan of the huge slit, the uncomfortable stance or the protruding leg, all of which was obviously meant to be part of the ensemble.

I did decide to include one dress that I didn’t like. Surprisingly, this was considered one of the best dresses at the event. Jennifer Lopez‘s gown, in my opinion, was too tight, too revealing and way too stripe-y in all the wrong directions. I’ll leave it at that.

Did you watch the Oscars? Which was your favorite gown? Which was the worst, in your opinion?

    1. OOO!! I love these dresses!! Gwyneth Paltrow’s dress is my favorite! I love the white it is soo elegant! But J Los is badly fitted, doesn’t flatter her curves, and the fabric is really ugly! Nice article!

      • J Lo’s dress is SO ugly! I don’t know if anyone remembers this, but J. Lo and someone else said this quote together:
“A dress should be tight enough to show you’re a woman but loose enough to show you’re a lady.”
Great quote, right? But get this…J. Lo recited the “loose enough to show you’re a lady” part…in that dress!! Maybe she should practice what she preaches…

    2. I always love looking at the dresses the stars wear to red carpet events on Yahoo. And this time Gwyneth Paltrow’s was one of the worst ones because of the cape but I thought the cape went with the beautiful dress. I’m glad someone agrees! :DD

    3. Penelope Cruz’s dress was AMAZING…one of the best red carpet dresses EVER. So elegant, so gorgeous. I also loved Natalie Portman’s…I’d wear her whole look, very classy and vintage-y. Sarah Hyland also looked really pretty, if you look up the photo. And Bernice Beju (spelling?) also looked amazing. Agreed about J. Lo…too tight, too stripey, and her hair was kinda weird.

    4. I’m not thrilled about the “glamour” dresses. But I did like the other ones. And I now understand Stephen Tyler’s joke he made on American Idol this week–J’Lo was revealing way too much, simply put.

    5. To me, Gwyneth Paltrow would look a lot better if she wasn’t so skinny. And I feel as if the cape covered the dress, instead of showing it off. She could have gone with a shrug and it would’ve looked a lot better than a cape that hides her ensemble. But I do agree with the rest of the choices.

    6. Jennifer Lopez’s dress was supposed to compliment her skin tone, but I admit that the striped fabric was not very flattering. But we shouldn’t say what we could have done or say “well, if it were me I would have made the neck a little higher” because it was her choice. There’s really nothing we can say or do. When a celebrity has curves like that, they want to accentuate them as much as they can. It’s like easy publicity in Hollywood. I liked Penelope Cruz’s dress because it showed off very little skin and was simply elegant. Penelope Cruz has womanly curves and is proud of that. If you compare Cruz and Lopez, you’ll find that they both have lovely curves, but Penelope decided to show them in a way that required less skin and was more effective.
