My Favorite Redemption Verses
Written by Jenn Arman | September 19, 2011
Everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes a mistake can leave you feeling like you’re a bad person and a bad Christian. Some mistakes are harder to deal with than others, but God always has hope for us.
These verses help me when I’m feeling down about mistakes I’ve made and I hope they’ll help you, too!
Lamentations 3:22-23 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I love this verse because no matter how badly I’ve messed up or how terrible the day is, God’s compassion for me never fails. Every morning God has new compassion and mercy for us.
Genesis 3:21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. Okay, I know this one seems weird and you might be wondering: What does this have to do with redemption? Right before this verse in Genesis, Adam and Eve have just made the mother of all mistakes – they deliberately disobeyed God. Then, they hid and ultimately lied about why they were hiding.
God could’ve been angry with them. God could’ve sent them out of the Garden of Eden and left them naked and ashamed, but He didn’t. God had compassion for them and made them clothing. They still had to face the consequences for their actions, but from the beginning, God helped them.
Philippians 3:13-14 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. If you don’t know by now, Paul is one of my favorite people in the Bible. Paul was good at his job (persecuting Christians) and they were afraid of him (see Acts 8:3 and 9:13-14). Paul had some mistakes from his past that he needed to deal with. I love what he says: Forgetting what is behind. Paul realizes that he made mistakes, but they are in the past. He can’t change them so he forgets them and moves forward to what God has called him to do.
1 John 1:9 & 2:1 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness… My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
If we confess our mistakes, God is faithful to forgive us and Jesus speaks to the Father in our defense! I love these verses. They make me feel so loved and wanted by God. He’s given us the best defender ever!
These verses always remind me that God doesn’t just toss me aside when I make a mistake. God loves me and His mercy for me is new every day, no matter what I did the day before. God has called me for a purpose and He wants me to leave past mistakes behind and move forward into the life He has called me to live.
What are your favorite verses about God’s redemption, mercy or forgiveness?
Hebrews 4:16 – Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
