My Life Purpose is to ‘Do Something for God;’ ‘Until He Says Stop, I’ll Keep Going’ Dolly Parton Says

Dolly Parton might be famous for her vocal talents, but she is trying to make God known in everything that she does.

During a recent interview with The Christian Post, the renowned country singer shared the story of the time a woman in her church told her “you are anointed.”

“We grew up in the church and my grandpa was a Pentecostal preacher,” Parton shared. “So healing and praying and being anointed and all that stuff, that was nothing new to us, ‘cause we survived because of our faith in God to get us through and all that. But when that old lady told me that I was anointed, I didn’t know what that was. I was just thinking it was like, olive oil.”

Parton explained that she later asked her mother what that meant, who clarified, “That means that God has His hand on you; that you may do something special.”

“So I kinda held that also in the back of my mind, whether that was predestined or not, or whether I just took that little grain of faith and made that so for myself,” the singer added.

“I never let go of that. I always felt responsible to God that I was supposed to be doing something for God. I still feel like that, and I’m still doing it, trying to. Sinning all the way, but trying my best, and asking forgiveness seventy times seven.”

The country artist, who is best known for her vocal talents, has also dedicated her life to promoting better access to education for children around the world. Since 1995, her organization, the Imagination Library, has donated over 100 million books to children around the world.

“Every day I pray for God to lead me and to take out all the wrong things, wrong people in my life, and bring all the right things, right people, and to let me glorify Him and uplift mankind — to do something in this world to make it a little better than it was. And let me be a light and a vessel to be used,” Parton shared.

“I just wanted to do what I can in this world to make things better if I can, and I’m in a position to do it. If you get in a position to help, you should help,” the singer added.

Parton is not one to shy away from her faith, and her background growing up in Christianity. Earlier this fall, Parton teamed up with the Christian band For King & Country to create a remix of their song “God Only Knows.”

“When we originally spoke to @dollyparton on the phone, her words were, ‘When I first heard ‘God Only Knows’ I thought it was one of the best songs I’d ever heard. I feel that this is a good song for right now. I know that it touched me at a time when I needed to be lifted up,’” For King & Country shared on Instagram

“This song was Heaven-sent,” Parton told ET online in an interview. “I wanted to be a part of it because it just speaks to so many people out there that are having a hard time going through rough times.”

“It’s a beautiful song and I love singin’ it with them,” Parton added. “I think we need this song this day and time.”
