Football season is over, basketball season is on, and there’s a new sensation praising God! Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks is very open about his devotion to God and his desire to glorify Him as often as possible. Just recently Lin–the cause of “Linsanity”–told Fuse TV that he is inspired by Christian musician Lecrae and the band Hillsong.
Lin’s basketball career has not been much to write about until recently. Now that he’s in the limelight, his fans and others are learning more about him and his Christian beliefs. An evangelical Christian, Lin openly talks about God and even wears faith bracelets bearing the words, “In Jesus Name I Play” (IJNIP).
Lin loves basketball, but he plays for God. He’s also inspired by Jesus through Christian music.
An artist you got to check out is Lecrae…He’s a Christian rapper. Just raps a lot about the Gospel. I really enjoy his lyrics as well so if you’re a big lyrics guy he’s a good fit for you (Jeremy Lin).
Lin also told Fuse that he also enjoys listening to Hillsong, a Christian band, because it calms him down when he’s playing. Apparently Hillsong centers him and prepares him to play his best.
I listen to them to just remind myself why I’m playing the game and remind myself I’m playing to glorify God; I just try to focus on that…I try not to get too hyped up, otherwise I find myself kind of burnt out before the game or going into the game just with a little too much energy playing out of character (Jeremy Lin).
I believe that music is very influential. Just as it can energize you, it can bring you down. Music can influence you negatively, just as it can impact you positively. For Lin, music not only helps his game, but it reminds him why he is playing and who he is playing for.
What do you think about “Linsanity”? Do you listen to Hillsong or Lecrae? Do you listen to certain bands or musicians to evoke a specific mood?
