PI Quiz: Name That Song

In past posts, we’ve discussed how music is very influential. Even without understanding the message of a song, many people hum tunes or sing parts of the lyrics.

Songs create emotions, whether intentionally or unintentionally. For this reason, I believe we should listen to positive music with optimistic messages. Secular music today is very much tainted. Even in a positive song, messages promote bad behavior, such as promiscuity, drug use and excessive drinking.

But there is music that a Christian girl can listen to that promotes all the values her faith has taught her: Christian music. I know many of you have your favorite songs and musicians, but would you recognize them by just a few lines of lyrics?

Well, here’s your chance to test your knowledge of Christian music. All you have to do is name the song and the band or musician who sings it. Good luck!

Your money your singleness marriage talent and time
They were loaned to you to show the world that Christ is divine
That’s why it’s Christ in my rhymes
That’s why it’s Christ all the time
My whole world is built around him He’s the life in my lines.

There is a hope that you can hold on to.
There is a life line come to the rescue,
Just like a hand that’s waiting for you.
And if you believe in this I promise that you won’t be alone.

    We are filled with expectation
As we’re reaching for Your throne
There’s an anthem, hear it rising
    With a shout we cry
    With a shout we cry.

Yo faith ain’t never small that’s what brought you this far
See you got your dreams and you got your prayers and you got yo God he gone take you there
See everyone has a season and I believe this one’s yours
Cuz you been workin’ waitin’ this what you been prayin’ for.

God is not pleased man, it’s clear that His standards missed
‘Cause the world is running rampant with sin it’s an abandonment
Man is feeling stranded, feeling hopeless since his banishment
God is angry at the distortion and the mismanagement
Evil is at work, but don’t be thinking He can’t handle it.

Like the rising sun that shines
Awake my soul, awake my soul and sing
From the darkness comes a light
Awake my soul, awake my soul and sing.

    Sings my soul of how
Your love has set me free
    Sings my heart of how
    Your mercy rescued me
Hear my cry of endless love
To my Savior and to my King
    My heart is overwhelmed.

Sometimes life don’t go the way you planned
And we all have days when we just don’t understand
Searching for meaning, it’s not always easy
But your story’s not over, it’s still being told.

If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now
Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave.

Well it’s only the dead that can live
But still I wrestle with this
To lose the pain that’s mine
    Seventy times seven times
Cause Lord it doesn’t feel right
For me to turn a blind eye
Though I guess it’s not that much
When I think of what You’ve done.

    How did you do?

If you named between three and five correctly, I’d say you’re a pretty knowledgeable Christian music fan.

If you named between five and eight correctly, then you’re definitely a Christian music expert.

If you got all ten of them correct, well, I’d have to say you’re a Christian music genius.

PI readers, what’s your favorite Christian song?

    1. I got them all…so I’m a genius at something, I guess. Right now my favorite Christian song is Be Somebody by Thousand Foot Krutch. Very nice song. Also like Backgroud by LeCrae…and Switchfoot’s new CD was sweet.

      • I LOVE Christian music!!! I didn’t get right (sad to say) but Ik a pot of the artists, just not ALL their songs. But I got the ones by Lecrae, Newworldson, Britt Nicole(my favorite artist EVER!!!!<3), and TobyMac!!! But seriously like all I listen to is Christian music!!!!!!!! 😀 I especially love the radio stations Air1 and KLOVE! they play awesome music!!! I love sharing Christian music with my friends bc so much music these days have terrible lyrics and are encouraging bad, worldly things. Thank the Lord that their are still good people out there writing songs to praise the Lord!!! AMEN!!! 😀

    2. I don’t agree with the scale tho. I listen to most all those artists, but I have not heard every single song they sing, so I didn’t get some of them right. There is so much Christian music out there that this isnt necessarily a fair “test” of how much you know.

    3. Well, first off I only recognized the lyrics to one of the songs, and I didn’t even know the name. Honestly, I think Christian music these days is hypocritical. We’re supposed to honor God through music and a lot of lyrics end up being really shallow, simply just adding “God” and “Lord” and “Jesus” to represent a “Christian song.” And then the melodies of SO many Christian songs=awful! They are generally repetitive and uncreative. Artists like Michael Jackson, The Eagles, Queen, Stevie Wonder, and Celine Dion are 10X better than most of the Christian artists out there. So what other Christian girls out there would rather listen to good, melodic, creative, secular music than the “Christian” music in our culture?

      • Sadly, I have to agree. Actually, I was just talking about this with a friend today. We also mentioned how emotionless most churches are when singing lyrics which should be very powerful. If you have ever seen a Broadway, you have seen some real emotion put in to singing a song. And they aren’t even singing about their Creator. Worship music today is pretty sad…

        • Exactly! Glad to see someone else here notices the negative side of Christian music in today’s culture. Seriously, who’d rather listen to “Here I Am to Worship” than songs from “Phantom of the Opera” or “Les Mis?” I’d go with the latter all the way!

      • I’m SO glad I’m not the only one who feels this way! I listen to my local CCM station, but so much of what comes on is just musical crap and lyrically unoriginal. The songs are formulaic. I got the lyrics to two of these (although I know all the artists).
The thing is, Christian radio can’t seem to deal with songs that aren’t “happy Jesus songs”. What do I mean by that. The ones whose main lyrics are “praise God” “worship God” “holy, holy” “Jesus is good” “we give you praise” “we love you” “you are everything”…you know, all the cliche, tired old worship phrases. I’m a fan of a lot of older (but FAR BETTER) Christian music. Most of the artists I like have been around for a long time, and some of them don’t get any airplay anymore because they DARE to write songs that 1) actually have a message that’s not trite and 2) write songs that are musically potent. I’m a fan of Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, Third Day, dcTalk, Twila Paris, Phillips Craig and Dean, Amy Grant, Michael Card, Keith Green, Rich Mullins, Newsboys, Phil Keaggy…the stuff I grew up listening to in the 90s. I do like some of the newer (as in, past 10 years) artists (Mandisa, Brooke Fraser, Bebo Norman) but literally no one new that’s gotten significant airplay in the past 5 years or so has impressed me. I’ve listened to mainly Christian music my entire life, but I’ve found myself gravitating towards more secular music as of late.

    4. I don’t really listen to a lot of “mainstream” Christian music, though I’m a huge fan of TobyMac. I listen to a lot of metal, though I have to check the band out first to make sure they’re Christians for real. But I’ll be sure to check these artists out!

      • Oh, honey, you can do so much better. If you like the sound of those two, try Switchfoot, Newsboys (pre-Michael Tait), Rebecca St. James, and Jaci Velasquez. You will hear much, much better music.

    5. I got almost every one! 😀 Christian music is like all I listen to. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with listening to clean secular music, but to me if it’s not about God then what’s the point? Why waste my time on music that doesn’t Glorify God? I love all these songs, thx for posting! 🙂

      • But when you hear some of these Christian songs, are they really glorifying God. A lot of them simply just add “Jesus” and “God” to their lyrics and BAM! You’ve got a Christian song! Shouldn’t music also glorify God in terms of its melodic creativity and emotion? Honestly, I can’t stand most Christian songs these days. I hardly ever listen to Christian stations. Like Chris Tomlin, oh gosh! His songs are SOOO repetitive and boring!!!

        • Chris Tomlin had about 2 songs 10 years ago that were decent, and he didn’t write either of them. Now I turn it off whenever new stuff of his comes on. It’s horrible.
Do yourself a favor and listen to the good stuff. You’ve probably heard of Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, Third Day, and Newsboys. You probably haven’t heard of Keith Green, Amy Grant, Twila Paris, or Rich Mullins. Check out those last 4 if you want real lyrics and real music, check out anything Steven Curtis Chapman or Michael W. Smith have ever done, and check out the early stuff of the Newsboys (anything prior to about 2006) and Third Day. You will hear some hard-hitting lyrics. For some of the most honest lyrics of all (if you don’t mind hip-hop/rap), get ahold of some dcTalk.

    6. i love lecrae -especially God is Enough- and tobymac- especially Break Open the Sky. i also really like Needtobreathe (who sing both Christian and secular music). right now my favorite song is either All My Fountains by Chris Tomlin (i think) or Everywhere by someone i cant remember.

    7. Aw, man. I thought I was going to know them all. Christian radio is basically all I listen to. The only one I actually recognized was nine, the TobyMac song. That stinks. Well, hopefully I’ll hear all these songs in the near future!

        • I thought I was going to know them all too, but most of them aren’t big radio hits (at least my local station doesn’t play them) and while I have heard of all of those artists, most of them I don’t listen to on a regular basis because I’m not impressed.

    8. I LOVE BRITT NICOLE AND TOBYMAC!!!!! Try listening to Mandisa! she’s another great Christian artist too. “Good morning” is a VERY cheerful and catchy song. try it out! 😀

      • If you really like the Newsboys new sound with Michael Tait (and especially if you also love TobyMac), I suggest checking out dcTalk. Both of the aforementioned are former members, as well as Kevin Max who does background vocals on God’s Not Dead. You will love it.

    9. Im a fan of Christian music.I like the ones they play at my church (Make me new by together we stand). Corinne bailey ray doesnt sing christian songs (she is a christian though) BUT she doesnt sing those distasteful songs. EVERYONE has heard her one song “Put your records on” you know the “girl put your records on.tell me your favorite song just go ahead and let your hair down”. That’s my 2nd favorite genre in music. Her music is ammaazzzinngg but its over shined by swearing songs etc.She NEEDS to get more noticed! You forgot mission six,the rubeyz, paige armstrong and so many more! lol

      • AMEN. I am an extreme Christian music connoisseur, but I mainly stick to the good stuff (ACTUAL lyrics, not just mindless God-language, and ACTUAL music, not repetitive one-notes). I only knew two of these.

    10. I love Christian music!!! You girls should check out the band School of Worship. They sing just raw, powerful worship to our God and it’s so amazing and encouraging! Have a wonderful day, lovelies! 🙂

    11. I only got a few right, but i looooovveee christian music! i am constantly listening to it! My favorite song would probably have to be either Lose My Soul by TobyMac, Me Without You by TobyMac, City on our Knees by TobyMac, or Hold Me by Jamie Grace (featuring TobyMac). I’m obviously a big TobyMac fan haha. All my friends (and i go to Catholic school) think that its weird that all i listen to is Christian music because they listen to people like Nicki Minaj, pitbull, Katy Perry, LMFAO, and Lady Gaga who sing about gross, sinful, and downright demonic things! I think it’s sad, and when i try to talk to them about it they just ignore me and try to convince thermselves that that kind of music is OK (I believe that it is totally not). I used to only listen to that kind of music too, but God laid it on my heart on day that He wants better for me than that music, and since ive stopped listening to it wbout a year ago i think i have been a much better and happier person 🙂

    12. Try some of these lyrics on for size:

And the pain falls like a curtain
On the things I once called certain
And I have to say the words I fear the most
      “I just don’t know”
      And the questions without answers
      Come and paralyze the dancer
So I stand here on this stage afraid to move
      Afraid to fall
Oh but fall I must, on this truth
That my life has been formed from the dust
-“God Is God”, Steven Curtis Chapman

There was a boy who had the faith to move a mountain
And like a child he would believe without a reason
Without a trace he disappeared into the void and
I’ve been searching for that missing person
He used to want to try to walk the straight and narrow
He had a fire and he could feel it in the marrow
It’s been a long time and I haven’t seen him lately but
I’ve been searching for that missing person
      -“Missing Person”, Michael W. Smith

      We’re colored people
And we live in a tainted place
      We’re colored people
And they call us the human race
      We’ve got a history
So full of mistakes ’cause we are
      Colored people
Who depend on a holy grace
      -“Colored People”, dcTalk

All alone in my own self-will
      Old familiar story
So determined to try until I fail
You’ve been waiting as I learn again
      Straining to the pressure
And you offer me a better way
      Hear me pray
      Hear me say
      I choose grace
      -“I Choose Grace”, Twila Paris

Well sometimes my life just don’t make sense at all
And the mountains look so big
And my faith just seems so small
      So hold me Jesus
Cause I’m shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my Glory
Won’t you be my Prince of Peace
      -“Hold Me Jesus”, Rich Mullins

Like a foolish dreamer, trying to build a highway to the sky
All my hopes would come tumbling down, and I never knew just why
Until today, when you pulled away the clouds that hung like curtains on my eyes
Well I’ve been blind all these wasted years, and I thought I was so wise
But then you took me by surprise
-“Until Your Love Broke Through”, Keith Green

THOSE are good lyrics. THOSE are what I listen to and THOSE are what hold me up. Most of what you hear on the radio these days cannot hold a candle to any of that. Unfortunately, none of those get airplay anymore because they’re all more than 10 years old. I wish they would though. The stuff they’ve been replaced with isn’t even in the same league.

    13. I only got one. I was not allowed to listen to any non-christian music until a year or two ago, and my dad still dislikes anything that’s not by a Christian artist. (But I like One Direction, Kelly Clarkson, and some songs that are NOT dirty by a few other artists.) So I know mostly Christian music, but I just don’t know many artists. I grew up listening to: Tobymac, Newsboys, Barlowgirl, Superchick (love them!), and Britt Nicole. And I recently discovered the band Poema (MAZING, by the way) So I listen to Christian music, I just don’t know a bunch of Christian artists.
