Q&A: How Do Christian Celebrities Deal with Hollywood Temptation?
Written by T.M. Gaouette | October 10, 2011
In the Q/A post, Can You Stay Strong in Hollywood and Still be Successful?, I discussed ways in which a person could remain faithful as a celebrity in the devil’s playground, AKA Hollywood. In response, a reader asked whether kissing in movies is displeasing to God. Well, that question prompted me to consider the wider concern of temptation.
Do temptations exist on the sets in Hollywood?
I believe that they do. Yes! And these temptations test a celebrity’s faith and morality to the max.
For example, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s on-screen romance in Mr. and Mrs. Smith had them performing intimate and sexual scenes together. I believe that this ultimately led them to becoming a couple in real life.
Rumors are now flying about Jada Pinkett Smith and Marc Anthony’s off-screen relationship. They too share heated scenes in the television show HawthoRNe. Marc Anthony already split from wife J.Lo, and Jada is fighting rumors that her marriage to Will Smith is also on the rocks. These are just the most recent examples of Hollywood marriages broken up by on-set temptations.
The majority of movies and television shows are filled with temptations, such as kissing and other intimate scenes. Think about it! A kiss is a kiss, whether it’s on or off screen. Intimacy is the same, and often includes touching, nakedness and so on. Nothing is sacred. In such cases you could definitely argue that these situations are acts of unfaithfulness. I’m quite sure they cause a lot of anxiety for the spouse watching, and ultimately stress within the marriage.
However, there is light in this dark reality. Celebrities don’t have to surrender to such temptations. In fact, there are a number of famous people who have refused to.
Evangelist and actor Kirk Cameron was formally a teen heartthrob starring in the highly successful 80s teen sitcom, Growing Pains. Following his transition from atheism to Christianity, he insisted that the sitcom scripts be stripped of racy scenes. He also married his girlfriend in the show, actress Chelsea Noble. In the 2008 movie, Fireproof, Noble was brought in to replace Cameron’s on-screen wife so that the characters could end the movie with a kiss. “I have a commitment to not kiss any other woman,” Cameron had explained in interviews.
Actor Neal McDonough, a married Catholic, is well-known in the industry for refusing to do sex scenes because it goes against what his faith has taught him. In fact, in 2010, he was fired after three episodes of the ABC show, Scoundrels because he held on to his morals and refused to do sex scenes with his co-star. Faith and fidelity before fame! Nice.
In the recent PI post, Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher Are My Role Models for a Strong, Christian Marriage, I mentioned how Carrie Underwood avoids intimacy in her music videos out of respect for her husband and marriage.
All of these examples demonstrate how even a huge star can say “no” to Hollywood and its temptations. All of these celebrities put their marriages first and ultimately glorified God in their decisions.
Do you think that all actors in Hollywood should take a cue from Cameron, McDonough and Underwood? Do you know of other celebrities who have refused to allow Hollywood’s temptations to compromise their marriage and faith in God?
