Q&A – What Can I Do To Hear God’s Voice? Part Two

What can I do to hear God’s voice?

When we think of a voice, we think of something we can hear with our ears. However, this isn’t the only way we communicate with each other. We can talk without saying a word. We talk with our eyes, smiles, gestures, even the pattern of our breathing. If we as humans can communicate in more than just words, surely God can communicate without spoken words.

Ways that God speaks:

  • Through His Word! – I can never say this enough. God gave us a whole book of His voice. It’s called the Bible. I know God is always with me, not because God stood in front of me and said so in a voice I could physically hear. I know it because God said so in Deuteronomy 31:6 and again in Hebrews 13:5. The number one way to hear the voice of God is to read the Bible.
  • Inner voice – God uses our inner voice or conscience to speak to us. This is usually a quiet voice, one that you need to “be still” (Psalm 46:10) to hear. This is where desire comes in. You must desire to hear the still, quiet voice of God. If you aren’t sure if it’s God speaking to you through your conscience, measure what you’re hearing against what the Bible says. God will never ‘say’ anything to you that disagrees with His Word. If what you’re ‘hearing’ disagrees with the Bible, it isn’t God. We hear this quiet voice most often in prayer.
  • Creation – Do you love the beach, the mountains, rain, dogs, cats, flowers, autumn and spring? God can speak of His beauty and love to us through His creation. I was lucky enough to see autumn (my favorite season) in Pennsylvania one October day and it was so beautiful I could barely breathe. Through that beauty, God told me that He knew my favorite season and He loves me so much that He wanted to show me just how beautiful autumn could be. When I’m crying or sick, my cats come and sit in my lap and purr. They don’t even mind that my tears get their fur wet. That’s God saying He’s with me when I feel the most uncomfortable or alone.
  • Silence – Something that many Christians don’t understand is that God can speak through silence. If you feel like you aren’t hearing God or He isn’t speaking to you, don’t jump into panic mode. Instead, pray and ask what God is trying to teach you through silence. Maybe God wants you to read the Bible more so He stopped speaking to you in prayer. Keep faith! God has promised He will NEVER leave you or forsake you, Hebrews 13:5.

God also speaks through prophets, visions, dreams and so many other ways. If you think God has spoken to you in these ways, don’t be afraid to discuss it with leaders whom you trust. They can help you confirm whether these things measure up to God’s word. If you belong to Jesus then God has chosen to speak to you!

Matthew 11:27 – “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

I have always been jealous of the people in my life who talk about hearing God. I could never understand how they heard Him. How they could tell it was Him. Last night, I heard him. I knew it. It was as if I hit a brick wall. I suddenly felt sick. I wanted to cry and scream. That made me stop what I was doing. Because I knew it was wrong. The next part was realizing why I stopped. Why it was wrong. It was amazing, and afterward, I felt the most amazing, fulfilling feeling of relief. I knew that I had just obeyed my Lord. I did what He told me to do. Now I hope I can hear God more often. I will do what he says!

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes it’s hard to dechiper it. Don’t know whether it’s Him or a trick of the ememy.

I think it’s either Him, or you by getting lost in your own thoughts and blocking out what God wants for us. I know that’s what happens to me at least! When I feel an urge to do something that Lord instructs me to do, and I don’t feel like doing it- I will try to block that out by my own thoughts. Does that happen to you?

Love it. I hear his voice in my head all the time. He says,I love you or don’t do that when I want to do something wrong. If God was not there to speak to us,we’d get in trouble all the time.

🙂 This is awesome. I think every Christian deals with the concern of hearing God in at least one point of their lives. I know this is what I need to hear. there are time periods in my life where i feel God in everything, and other times (like recently) where it’s more difficult, or I’m trying too hard, or I’m just not being quiet enough to hear Him 😀 I think this article helped me a ton seeing that I’m obviously not alone in this area, and I just need to take time to be still and listen for my God. Thanks~
