Seven Things To Know About The Holy Spirit

Growing up, I didn’t have a clear understanding about The Holy Spirit. I was taught a lot about God and Jesus; unfortunately, The Holy Spirit was somewhat neglected within the teachings of my childhood church. It wasn’t until I became an adult that I began to learn more about the power of The Holy Spirit.

We all know that The Holy Spirit is God and that He is a part of The Trinity, but what else do you know about Him? Do you know that He should be your best friend while you’re here on Earth? Let’s take a moment to explore who The Holy Spirit is and why He’s your best friend.

The Holy Spirit is a PERSON in spirit form. The Holy Spirit is not a “thing” or an “it.” I can’t count how many times I’ve heard people refer to God’s Spirit as an “it.” The Holy Spirit is a person in spirit form who lives inside every child of God.

The Holy Spirit gives you a sense of belonging. After you accept Jesus as your Lord and personal savior, The Holy Spirit enters you in order to seal your salvation. Once this happens, you’re marked as a child of God. Everyone in Heaven and Hell knows that you belong to God and that you’ve been adopted into His Kingdom.

The Holy Spirit comforts you. Although you can sometimes find comfort in your human friends, NOTHING compares to God’s comfort. He always knows what to do or say to help you through a difficult time. However, unlike people, He’ll never get tired of coming to the rescue.

The Holy Spirit is your guide. God wants you to be happy in this life and The Holy Spirit has been left behind to guide you to your destiny. He offers guidance to help you along your path toward a successful life.

The Holy Spirit gives you gifts. Have you ever wondered why you’re so talented in certain areas? Have you ever questioned why some people are naturally talented in one area while other people have an amazing ability in another? Well, The Holy Spirit gives each believer his or her spiritual gifts.

The Holy Spirit empowers you! Have you ever found yourself saying or doing things that you’re normally too timid to say or do? Examples would be standing up to a bully with no fear or witnessing to a group of peers? Well, that boldness comes from The Holy Spirit!

You can call on The Holy Spirit at ANY TIME! The Holy Spirit lives inside of you so He’s always in your presence. Day or night, in any place or at any time, He’s always ready and willing to help you. What’s even more amazing is that He has the answer to EVERY SINGLE ONE of your problems!

I thank God for more fully revealing Himself to me! Now that I have a better understanding of who The Holy Spirit is, I constantly seek guidance from Him. I don’t just go to Him about spiritual matters, either–I go to Him for direction about EVERYTHING that’s going on in my life! Jesus says this:

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you (John 14:26).

I was introduced to the Holy Spirit just last year. Before that, I never really thought about who He was. I was at a conference called “Onething” down in Kansas City, and I felt a pull on my heart from the Lord to go to a session called “Explaining the Holy Spirit” while I was there, they shared verse after verse with me about what it meant to have the Holy Spirit living inside me, and I wanted it. I especially wanted to be able to speak in tounges. At the end, they called fourth anyone who wanted prayer to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, and I went up, and a lady prayed for me, and I got it! I got the gift of tounges! Now I feel as though I have more power to do things for Jesus! I can prophesy and give words to people, because the Lord is so much more real to me now! And I haven’t stopped praying in my prayer language, because it really builds up my spirit, empowering me to do things for the Lord. He is SO good!

I liked this article a lot Aysha, because not all denominations of Christianity make this subject very clear! I myself am blessed to go to a church where the power of the holy spirit is emphasized greatly, and I’m so glad that others are able to learn about something so important that they wouldn’t learn elsewhere 🙂

It’s great that you actually mention HolySpirit. Usually people just avoid Him. We definitely need the HolySpirit to grow closer and further in our spiritual life and prepares us for His coming.
So thanks again for your article 🙂

    Hey Aysha and Nicole!

Guess what? I know the Holy Spirit!! I speak in the heavenly language mentioned in Acts the first chapter, and Jude. (and other books, just these especially.)

Three years ago I was healed from heart, spine, and bone issues! I was told by professionals more than
once that I would need major corrective surgeries! (one being replacing a valve in my heart. I already had open heart and a pacemaker since birth. Another being scoliosis corrective surgery top to bottom.)

Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit…without Him and His grace and power, I wouldn’t be alive! (born with five holes in my heart.)

Thank you so much for choosing Aysha’s article to share!!

wow Kiana you are a blessing and an angel! I am so touched by reading this! Would you mind elaborating on what you mean for the Heavenly language? I would like to hear more of your story, and how you recovered, and what you learned about the Holy Spirit. If you would be willing to share your story with me and the girls, I will give you a c28 gift card for 50$! 🙂 Please email me at Nicolemweider@gmail.com!

        Hiya, Nicole!!
Thanks so much for the opportunity to share! I would love to expound! There’s just “something” about Him… As the Anthem Lights say, ‘We Can’t Shut Up’! 🙂

I’ll e-mail you. Thank you so much for replying. Thank you so much for spending time with us! You’re really quite awesome.

I’m so glad that so many of you enjoyed this topic. I think The Holy Spirit deserves more honor than He receives within the church today.

It’s great to know that so many of you have been baptised in the Spirit! That’s awesome! I also LOVE talking to God in the Spirit!

Of course speaking in tongues isn’t what saves you. People can go to Heaven without ever having been baptized in The Spirit. However, speaking in tongues does give one added power while here on the Earth.

My heart is blessed reading your many posts! Keep up the good work for God!! =)

I completely believe in the Holy Spirit but find it strange that a great number of Christians only believe that you receive the Holy Spirit once you start speaking in tongues. The Bible NEVER says this. It says that you receive the Holy Spirit when you BELIVE IN GOD AND ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR. It says that to only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ, yet some Christians believe you cannot be saved without speaking tongues. I believe speaking tongues is a spiritual gift, not the Holy Spirit itself. Actually the tongues spoken by those Christians are different than the ones from the Bible. When the apostales received tongues on the Day of Penecost, it was a actual language, just different than the one they spoke. If you read the chapter, you’ll see that the people were amazed because each one heard the apostales speak in their own language. God gave some people this gift so they could preach to people who didnt speak their language. But nowadays we have translaters, so we don’t really need tongues. The tongues people speak today are completely unfathomable, unlike the tongues from the Bible.

    • Posted by on November 21, 2011 at 16:32

Talking in tongues is important and there is a reason for it “He who speaks in tongues edifies himself…I would like every one of you to speak in tongues” (1 Corinthians 14:4,5)
“For anyone who speaks in tongues does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understand him; he utters mysteries with his spirit” (1 Corinthians 14:2)
You are right that the most important part is to be saved but today we need tongues more than anything to help edify ourselves. God gave us this gift for that and there are also gifts of interpretation and gifts of prophecy that are often very closely related to the gift of tongues to help us make sense of it all.

Speaking in tounges is really helpful in my prayer life. When I have nothing else to say, the spirit prays through me, and I know that God understands even if I don’t. All you have to do is ask, and recieve! The Lord is so good to give you this desire for this gift! And He wants to bless you with it! Just keep asking, and give your tounge to Him, and just start to let Him speak through you. It will be one of the most powerful things to experiance in your life! 🙂 God bless!

The Holy Spirit enters you when you accept Jesus as your savior. When you accept Him you are also accepting the Holy Spirit (or also called Holy Ghost) and God. There are then gifts of the Holy Spirit such as Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, Gifts of knowledge, the discerning of spirits, and others(there are 9 main ones check out 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 in bible ). I’m really glad you want to receive this gift though :). God will give you this gift if you want it and he will see in your heart you are sincere so keep praying and I truly hope you will receive this gift it does amazing things in your life. check out this site

    • Posted by on November 15, 2011 at 16:33

The Holy Spirit is not the ability of speaking in tongunes. The Holy Spirit is the Friend who witnesses our kinship of God and helps us know God’s will. It also helps us what to do in hard situations and comforts us. You can have the Holy Spirit with out speaking with tongues for even 5 seconds.

      • Posted by on November 16, 2011 at 00:54

That is entirely true! I know many Christians who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and have never spoken in tongues. 🙂

  16. Posted by on November 14, 2011 at 04:17

Read some spots in Acts and see what else the Holy Spirit does! :))))

Ditto! i had heard of the Holy Spirit before but had never anything more than that. Plus i wasn’t raised going to church. Thank you for this article!

  18. Posted by on November 13, 2011 at 17:55

Hey you have to be a good person too to get into heaven. I mean you can accept Jesus as your personal savior and all, but I doubt you get into heaven if you murder people and do whatever you want…it’s dangerous to go around telling people that the “Holy Spirit enters you in order to seal your salvation” after you accept Jesus as Lord and personal Savior, becuase you also have to at least try to be a good person by following Jesus Christ’s example to get into heaven, on top of being confirmed.

    • Posted by on November 25, 2011 at 18:09

We do not get into heaven by what we have done, but by what Jesus has done for us. We cannot earn our way into heaven.” Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’.” John 14:6. Jesus is the only way into heaven. We are all broken people who are in need of deliverance. Jesus came to save the sinners, not the rightous. “On hearing this, Jesus said to them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.'” Mark 2:17. He forgives us ALL of our sins. Say I murdered someone. Jesus will forgive me of all my sins. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9.

      Hi Sophia.

I think I understand the point that you’re trying to make. However, The Bible tells us that works doesn’t get us into Heaven. Only accepting Jesus as our saviour allows us the free gift of salvation. We’ll be rewarded for our works when we get to Heaven, but works itself doesn’t get us there.

But what’s great about salvation is that when we truly love God, we’re obedient unto His Word. Our minds are renewed and we don’t want to hurt God by engaging in ungodly activities.

Also consider this about The Holy Spirit:

“We were also chosen to belong to Him. God decided to choose us long ago in keeping with His plan. He works out everything to fit His plan and purpose. We were the first to put our hope in Christ. We were chosen to bring praise to His glory.

You also became believers in Christ. That happened when you heard the message of truth. It was the good news about how you could be saved. When you believed, He marked you with a seal. The seal is the Holy Spirit that He promised.

The Spirit marks us as God’s own. We can now be sure that someday we will receive all that God has promised. That will happen after God sets all of His people completely free. All of those things will bring praise to His glory.” (Ephesians 1:11-14)

Hope this clears some things up about the article. Continue to do what’s right and God will continue to bless you!

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” -Ephesians 2:8,9

We arent saved by what we do. We are saved though Christ and Christ alone.

Over this summer I went to a leadership training camp and was baptised in the Holy Spirit. Before then, I had always thought that the HS was some intangible, vague fog of God-inspired emotion that people would experience during worship which would lead to random bursts of gibberish. But the Pastor at the camp really cleared it up for me. The HS is a person, is God, can be your best friend, and that Tongues is a heavenly language that humans don’t understand (1 Corinthians 14:2)! I can’t count the number of times that some situation would be bugging me endlessly at night and I would just start praying in the Spirit and, even though I had absolutely no clue what I was saying, would feel a peace about whatever was bugging me. I really like this article, Aysha, because it is a subject that most churches just don’t mess with! And it should be a subject of great importance! Along with 1 Corinthians 13 and 14, I know that I will continually refer back to this article to keep my faith up. Thank you!!

I love to pray in the Spirit. (I call it my prayer language) It gives me just such a boost in my spirit, and God speaks to me, and gives me visions more, and He also gives me words for other people to help encourage them. Our church went through a really rough time not too long ago, and it was on this issue. Our church believed that the Holy spirit doesn’t work today, and the “spiritual gifts” (Such as speaking in tounges, prophesying etc..) weren’t for today. That was a big problem for us, because we know from 1 Corinthians 13 and 14, it is pretty clear that they ARE still for today. We should always go back to the bible, Gods holy word! It’s our weapon! Its our double edged sword! 🙂 I just always tell people to go back to the word!
Oh, and I don’t know what I’d do without the Holy spirit… He helps me soo much in my everyday life.

    • Posted by on November 21, 2011 at 07:41

But also you have to understand that there are some humans who are given the gift of interpretation of tongues by the holy spirit (1 Corinthians 12:10)

The Holy Spirit is revealing itself to me and it has been in me for, I think, 2 years.

This was really eye opening to me. I never really thought of the Holy Spirit as a “Him”, more as a “it”. I really love how He’s the seal to our salvation. It’s like being stamped with God’s family seal. 🙂 I heart it.

    Thanks for writing this article!!!
