Hello PI! Recently I was able to attend an advance screening of the new movie Heaven Is for Real. Most of you are familiar with the story of four-year-old Colton Burpo and how, while in lifesaving surgery, he experienced something beyond any of our imaginations: a real visit to heaven! The story is truly a remarkable one, and just how much little Colton knew about heaven and the experiences he had makes you really believe he actually was there.
Watch the trailer here:
The screening took place at Sony Pictures’ main lot in Los Angeles. A group of pastors, writers and actors were given a first glimpse at how director Randall Wallace was able to take this story and show it on the big screen. As you can imagine, trying to describe heaven is one thing, but trying to show it in its absolute stunning imagery is another!
I don’t want to go into too much detail about the film, but just know that it’s a tear-jerker. Connor Corum, the actor who plays Colton Burpo, did a tremendous job. The story behind the casting of Connor was also truly remarkable. He wasn’t the first choice for this film due to his very young age (four). However, he proved everyone wrong and even shocked actor Greg Kinnear! This little boy makes the film.
What was great about this screening was hearing how much God played a hand in its making. Through stories of actors seeking roles for this film and just how everything came together, God was definitely at play. Everyone at the screening was touched by Colton’s story just as America was.
One interesting note: During the Q and A after the film, a lady who described herself as an atheist talked about how she wanted to find flaws in the characters’ faith, but she couldn’t find any. That’s what is so great about this film: It doesn’t portray being a Christian as perfect. It portrays it as a challenge. It shows that we as Christians struggle like everyone else. However, through Christ we have hope. We turn to Him when we desperately need Him and praise Him when we are in awe. That’s really what this film does a tremendous job of—showing what Christianity is truly like.
Sitting in the darkened theater next to so many incredibly creative people in Hollywood and watching this GREAT film really moved me. With Heaven Is for Real, Son of God, Noah and God’s Not Dead all coming out this spring, it’s evident Hollywood is having a faith-based film renaissance not seen in decades!
Heaven Is for Real will be out in theaters this Easter, and I must say you need to see it on EASTER weekend! Hollywood is noticing, girls—we need to support these films and they will continue to make them. One note of caution: Don’t forget to bring tissues with you to the theater!
PI Girls, are you planning to see Heaven Is for Real?
