With summer fast approaching, I’ve been thinking about beach days and pool parties. And with this thought comes the question of what to wear.
Swimwear is getting more risque by the year. Plunging front, cut-out, high-cut and monokini designs leave very little to the imagination. And it doesn’t take much for a boy’s imagination to wander into sinful thoughts when so much skin is exposed.
Well, don’t worry, ladies! I’ve been cyber shopping for swimsuits that are fun, fashionable and modest. Just remember: The examples I’ve provided are more for style than color and pattern.
The following are one pieces that are low-cut on the hips. The V-neck and halter top versions are more suited to ladies with a smaller bust. If you would rather cover the hips more, consider the one piece with the shorts.
Tankinis are also a modest option worth looking into. These are two piece swimsuits with a tank top. Modesty includes covering the stomach, so tankinis are appropriate. Tankinis are available with regular bikini bottoms, but I think that shorts are more modest. You could also consider skirtinis, but not many of those come with tank style tops.
Swim dresses are so adorable. Check out the examples below. These are basically dresses you can swim in.

In addition to your swimsuit, you may want to purchase a cover-up garment. This is an item of clothing that you can wear on top of your suit when you’re not swimming. Options include tunics, sarongs, beach robes and sundresses.
When shopping for a swimsuit, think about why you want it. What is your intention when you’re at the beach or pool? Is it to swim and relax in the sun? Or do you want to be ogled by strange boys and men–or even boys and men that you know–who likely are conjuring up sinful thoughts about you, whether intentionally or unintentionally?
Christian girls don’t get a pass at being modest when on the beach. You’re still responsible for dressing appropriately!
Have you bought your swimsuit yet? Which style is your favorite?
I love these, they’re beautiful. But they’re too low cut. Not necessarily when standing up, but when one bends over, everything will flop out. I do love the swim dresses, though. I’ve been looking for something like that.
The scoop neck ones are not too low neck. You have to select one that works with your body type.
I was talking about the V-neck ones. I don’t think those are quite modest enough, no matter what body type you have.
I was talking about the V-neck ones. I don’t think those are quite modest enough, no matter what body type you have. Just my opinion, though 🙂
Oops. Sorry about posting that twice.
I have a swimdress that I’ve had for 7 years now; been wanting a new one but the budget’s kinda tight so I doubt I’ll be getting one. I often wear one of my pool suits (just regular one-pieces) with a pair of shorts, too. You can mix and match those a lot., which is fun.
You’re right.
Great ideas T.M.! You had mentioned that a lot of tankinis don’t come with the skirt bottom. A lot of places nowadays are selling all thier swimsuit peices separately, so I’ll buy a cute swim top somewhere, then go to Walmart and buy shorts to go with it, mostly because they’re a lot cheaper 🙂 But I’m pretty sure they have the skirt bottoms at Walmart too! I haven’t bought my swimsuit yet, but I saw a bunch of cute, modest ones at Academy Sports. http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearch?Ntt=swim&Ntk=All&langId=-1&storeId=10151&Rc=100&N=871287452+10001&catalogId=10051 They do have bikinis, but they also have a bunch of modest tops, and skirt bottoms too!
Thanks for sharing that.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING! Every year I’m constantly stressed about finding a modest–but cute swimsuit. All these ideas are great, but I think the swimsuit dresses are my fave!
Ikr. I always doubt I’ll be able to find a modest one, i’d rather wear shorts and a tshirt. 🙂
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been thinking about it for a while now.
I really like the swim dresses 😀
doesnt nicole wear bikinis?
yup
Oh wow all of these are really pretty and modest! I love the black and white one!
I love tankinis!!!
I’d totally wear the middle one piece, the zebra striped one, and the coral and brown swim dress. 🙂 If only I could find these wear I live I would be sooo happy. But alas, I can’t find anything. 🙁
Check the site I found these on -image credit at bottom of post has address. Be warned, however, that there are some very immodest swimsuits on the site, so follow the tips I suggested and you should be fine.
May I also suggest that there are modest strapless tankinis. I found one that fits snugly enough so it won’t fall off. I wear it with my swim skirt. It’s really fashionable and cut, but it’s not low at all, so it’s modest.
I got a bandeau tankini from Lands End and I’ve absolutely loved it! The straps come off so i can wear it as a strapless top or spaghetti strapped top. There are definitely modest strapless tops out there!
Ah man I am sooo out of it. I have never heard of any of these! Do you know of any good stores to buy these cheap?
Lots of stores are doing tankinis and swim dresses these days. See my note above about the site I found these on.
Some of my Christian friends where bikinis. Is that ok or not? I don’t.
Read my style post about modesty. Bikinis look too sexy, in my opinion.
I agree. Bikinis would be better worn under tshirts and shorts if you can’t find a swimsuit or whatever.
Thanks! These are beautiful swimsuits! Unfortunately, I haven’t found modesty on the racks at Target, Wal-Mart, or even Big 5 Sports. Any suggestions on where to find these gorgeous suits, online or offline, preferably affordably?
I’ve seen a bunch of cute tankinis at Academy Sports, you might try there.
I love these ideas! My only problem is, modest swimsuits seem to be way more expensive! I’ve seen the dresses, and the tanks and shorts, but they always seem to be out of my price range 🙁
Ikr. They can be so expenssive!
Lands End always has some sort of cute modest swimsuit…the prices are a little high…but the suits are made well and last a really long time! They’re a very good investment.
These are so much cuter!!!!!!!!and much more appropriate!!!!!!!
Also Lands End has some great modest suits, not all on the website are modest but use discernment
I love Lands End. And I agree about using your discretion. It’s rare to find a store that offers modest swimsuits that are pretty. And other sites include suits that are immodest. Use your best judgement while following the above tips, if you are looking for a modest swimsuit.
Though even at Land’s End, the bikinis are a whole lot better than those out at most stores like Target and Kohls. They’re still too immodest, but as far as site-surfing, Land’s End bikinis are more like the ones they wore in the 1940s and 50s.
I can’t wait to get my swimsuit so I can hit the pool becuase it is getting hot here in St.Louis. So,it’s not okay for a christian girl to were bikinis?
Well, you wouldn’t want to tempt guys with your body, you know? God wants us to have pure minds. 🙂
These are pretty cute! Although I think girls can wear bikinis, as long as the top covers well. No one wants to pop out of their bathing suit. I strongly believe that all girls should wear a cover-up when they aren’t swimming or sunbathing. I like to think of it as “how would you like someone looking at you in your underwear?”
Haha, yes, the underwear part was funny!
I found this fantastic website with amazing swimsuits, and very modest. It’s divinitasole.com
Oohhh, they do have some gorgeous modest ones… but they are a bit expensive… :/ anyhow, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for posting this! I have been longing for some a modest swimsuit! I do have a question, however…
You said in the last bit that Christian girls still have to be modest on the beach, and I agree with you 100%, but do you think are swim shorts have to be to the knee then, like regular shorts, because if they are really short like most swimsuits, I stil don’t think that’d be quite appropriate. Please let me know your thoughts about this. Thank you! 🙂
Read my post about modesty. The shorts in my above examples are fine because you are swimming. These would not be okay for everyday dress, however.
Thank you for this article! I especially love the swim dresses, they are so pretty and modest at the same time!
Yes. The swim dresses are my favorite.
I never really wear swimsuits that cover my stomach, mostly because I always have a hard time finding one that fits. But I always wear swim shorts when I swim. They’re pretty much like short gym shorts with different material and a little bit longer than the shorts in your pictures. I always try to find bikini tops that are modest and that won’t slip off. But, I never really worry about modesty because I swim at home anyway!
love the swim dressed i’ve never heard of them before
I’ve found some cute modest swimsuits at http://www.shabbyapple.com/ if you go to ‘clothing’ and then find ‘swim’ under ‘categories’. They also have really modest dresses, if anyone’s looking!
Question I’m a girl with a bigger bust then most girls my age. I don’t want to swim in a turtle neck but I still want to stay covered. What styles would you recommend for me?
Perhaps a scoop-neck? 🙂
Try Land’s End online. They have mix-and-match styles, so you can buy separate pieces bigger or smaller. They have really cute tops with higher-cut square and round necks, in pretty prints and different bra styles so you can be comfortably and completely covered. They’re a bit pricey, but the overstock sale department usually has tons of discount styles.
I am on a swim team, so it is best to wear snug fitting suits like the second picture – and It sucks that most Competitive suits have high hips. The ones that don’t are plain and boring but are still good quality fortunately 🙂
you do realize swim team suits have to have high hips….. right? They allow for better movement and speed and agility. They are also needed during practices so the coaches can better see your form and help you.
You could not swim fast in the suit in the middle…. it is too baggy around the thighs, and too baggy around basically everywhere… Swim suits for team must feel like a second skin.
I wish stores around me actually sold cute one-pieces. They’re all either the speedo suits for swim teams or old-ladyish looking ones. I always end up wearing a bikini because I hate the feeling of the loose fabric around my belly when wearing a tankini. I can’t stand it. I never buy string bikini’s though, I try to find ones with big straps to cover more skin. I have a smaller bust so the v-neck doesn’t look horribly immodest on me.
I love these!! They are lovely, and so modest! While the v-necks might be a little low (in response to Rae), we could be wearing so much worse, like bikinis! It also depends on your body type and size, I suppose. I really like the swim dresses, and also the one piece in the middle of the top row! Thanks for sharing 🙂
*GASP* the red. swim. dress. BEAUTIFUL! I want it.
I agree with a few of them being too low cut-they’ll esp hang low once they’re heavy with water…but the summer/bathing dresses are adorable!! I really like them, just what I have been looking for.
I LOVE these Ideas! Nicole also posted a pic of her wearing a 1950’s monokini (one-piece swimsuit) with a big straw hat, and I LOVED it! Mom always makes me wear cute but modest (compared to bikinis) tankinnis, which do “show a little skin”, but are still cute and cover up a lot and are way better than swim team one-pieces. I am glad to see that there are very cute and stylish suits out there that are fashionable but yet very modest. Thank you for this T.M.! 😀
These one pieces are NOTHING like swim team one pieces. Swim team one pieces could never look so baggy, the tighter the better!
i hate monokinis they are soo freakin’ immodest
Oh, I LOVE the swimdresses! I don’t swim cuz I feel so uncomfortable in a swim suit. I’m sure I’d feel much better in a swimdress!
But you should never be uncomfortable with your body! It is perfect, the only one like it, so y should u care?!
Cute! I myself wear mini bathing suit pants over my swimsuit for modesty purposes, simply because I have a bikini line, and my bathing suit tries to become a thong *I know, embarrassing* 🙂
I LOVE the coral and brown swim dress 🙂
I really dont like these im all for modesty but i dont see anything wrong with a bikini
SAME WAY I FEEL!
does this mean its not ok to wear closer to bikini type swimsuits (I dont mean like string bikinis) bc I like to wear those types of bathing suits… its not like I’m showing much any ways cuz I dont really have much that would show… so is it still ok to wear these?
That’s so cute! I’ve never even heard of a swim dress! Adorable!!!!!!!
I wear a bikini. I am a Christian girl. One of my best friends is one of the strongest Christians I know, and she also wears a bikini. Its what you are comfortable in.
I have an issue with finding modest swimsuits. I REALLY HATE when I get out of the water when I’m wearing a one piece or tankini and the wet material sticks to my stomach. It just absolutely drives me crazy (I don’t know why, but it does!). I’ve looked at modest suits that don’t have material over the stomach, but I just can’t find any that I like or are modest. Any one have any suggestions?? Thanks in advance! 🙂
OOOOO those are CUTE! I like me a fab and fashionable full piece!
I combo my swimwear since its hard to find a full peice thats cute and AFFORDABLE. I go to ashley stweard (the plus/full size clothing store for women) get the smallest size there and find me a pair of water proof shorts/skirts and tahdah. For something to go over that I wear a regular tanktop and a nice long maxi skirt!
I love all of these swimsuits 🙂 but whenever I got to Target or other stores all they have is bikinis
I’ve always thought that too! Even when you look in the section for little girls, it’s insane the types of swimsuits they are selling there! But, i did find a really
cute, fun, very modest one peice swimsuit there! It took a little searching, but it was there 🙂
i love thisi love this! my bathing suit is a high necked one piece!!! its really unique and one of a kind!
Modcloth one pieces are very vintage. Love them!
my swimsuit shows shows a bit of back. is that alright?
it’s not a lot, and i don’t feel inappropriate or provocative when I’m wearing it, but i like my swimsuit a lot.
After reading this, i realized that my current swimsuit isn’t very modest:( I’m going on vacation in a few days and dont want to wear the one i have! i hope my mom will take me shopping to get a new one! I really like the swim dresses, never heard of them before! I hope there is a store that carries them where i live:)
I really don’t see the problem with bikinis. You can be a good Christian and still wear bikinis….
A lot of tankinis tend to have a split that goes down your chest, and sometimes it can be kind of revealing. Something that a couple of my friends do to tankinis like that is take an old swimsuit (or that type of fabric) and sew it into the suit, to fill the ‘gap’. I think its a really cute idea, and it gives a lot more options if you’re uncomfortable in that type of swimsuit (like me- I’ve decided that swimsuits and I don’t get along very well.)
I WEAR BIKINIS
Hmm… I’m not a huge fan of the swim suits you posted, I would look around more for cuter options. That being said, I don’t wear bikinis, I wear tankinis (but not with shorts… because I don’t think those are very cute) I found a beautiful tankini and Macy’s that is modest!
All cute 🙂
I found a swim dress on that website that’s super cute! and I might even get it, but I don’t exactly understand the sizes. Can anyone help? thanks 🙂
