Texas Teens Complete ‘Operation Beautiful’: A Makeup-Free Day

Girls, everyone is naturally beautiful…because that’s how God made you! Here at Project Inspired, we celebrate everyone’s natural beauty by sharing PI Girls’ gorgeous, makeup-free photos on our “Me Without Makeup” wall. So we were thrilled to learn that teen girls at Plano Senior High School in Texas are working to redefine what “beauty” means at their school with an initiative called “Operation Beautiful.” Their first task? A makeup-free day last Friday.

“I just really began to see how I don’t need makeup to be beautiful,” Madeline Milby, 17, told ABC News. The vice president of student congress and senior at PSHS continued, “There’s so much more to me. It’s your personality, your passion and what’s inside your heart.” Milby says that she would spend up to an hour and 15 minutes getting ready for school, putting on makeup and styling her hair. Once she talked to other girls at school about it, she saw that she wasn’t alone.

“A while back we heard of a school doing this before, and we thought it’d be a really cool idea to bring it to our school,” Milby said. “The goal for this project is to promote inner beauty and to let girls know it’s not about what’s on the outside but about what’s on the inside, and that’s what makes you beautiful.”

Last semester, Milby teamed up with senior class president Binna Kim and student congress president Monica Plenger to try to get all of the girls at school to forego makeup for a day.

“I think there’s pressure for girls to look a certain way, to meet a standard. The standard is being pushed through media and magazines and everything,” said Milby. “I’m really hoping it’ll make the girls at school feel more comfortable and see that they’re beautiful without makeup and they don’t need to use makeup to cover up themselves.”

The girls (with the help of several other classmates) created a YouTube video explaining the mindset behind “Operation Beautiful.” Thankfully, their teachers were super supportive and showed the video in their classrooms!

Watch the video here:

“We challenge you this Friday, March 8, to not wear makeup and support Operation Beautiful,” say subtitles at the end of the video.

So how did it go? “It went really well!” Plenger wrote on the YouTube comments. “I would like to say we had about a 90-95% participation at our school. Right now we’re trying to help out other schools that are interested in starting the project.”

What do you girls think about this story? Do you feel pressured to spend a lot of time getting ready for school? Have you submitted your “Me Without Makeup” pic to us yet?! Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

I’ve never worn makeup before. I don’t think I want to for a while. Yeah, every once in a while I’ll say I’m going to start putting it on but then I realize that I’m beautiful so there’s no reason for me to. I’m content now and i’m happy, happy, happy! 😉

I don’t wear make-up unless its for something where i have to dress up. I’m glad that girls want to stress inner beauty and that guys think inner beauty is way more important. I love it when i see girls who normally wear make-up, not wear makeup at all.

Yay, I’m not alone!!!! Sometimes I feel like I’m the only girl in the universe who doesn’t wear makeup and do my hair like Angelina Jolie every day.

I love days when I don’t where makeup! People can barely tell that I am not wearing it. I hate putting on makeup and having to take it off. We should have a day like this at my school!

I don’t wear makeup because number one, I don’t wake up with enough time before my class to put it on and number two, I forget to put it on anyway. One night on my dorm floor I almost didn’t recognize one of the girls without her makeup on and thought, “That’s sad that I don’t recognize so-and-so without makeup.” When I do wear makeup, I get a lot of compliments, and don’t get me wrong, I like compliments, but I don’t want to have to wear makeup or a cute outfit to get them!

I hardly ever wear makeup. I am 14 everyone wears it. I love it, but I don’t feel like waking up an hour earlier every morning just to look better. Makeup free is not a big deal for me. A big deal for me is actually wearing makeup to school.

No one should believe that they need make-up to convince themselves that they are beautiful. No one should believe that they are unimportant. No one should believe that no one likes them. Everyone should believe that they are naturally beautiful. Everyone should believe that they matter a lot. Everyone should believe that people care about them, and that God loves them so much, with or without make-up. <3

I support Operation Beautiful!! It’s amazing to see God use PI in my daily life, because today my friend and I were talking about having inner beauty. Ever since I found PI, I’ve been able to see more of my inner beauty! I don’t wear make-up everyday, because I know I am made beautifully and perfectly by God! Operation Beautiful restates that fact and that is one of the reasons I support it! 🙂

I think this is a beautiful idea!! Absolutely love it! For us Catholics, we are in the season of lent right now. So for lent this year I decided to give up makeup along with some other commitments. And I have actually being loving it. It has been hard at some times when I feel like crawling behind it to look pretty. But it has really helped in my confidence by giving it up!

I dont see what the big deal is. People dont wear makeup all the time. In college we did it for a week. ^^ Though we didnt get any media coverage. :/ lol It was pretty humbling. Especially when your crushes are near. Honestly I didnt recognize a lot of the girls without makeup! lol

The most makeup I ever wear is when I am dancing. I try not to put on too much makeup, because I don’t want people to see a fake me. I occasionally put on some makeup to play with my natural beauty, but very little makeup is something that I love. I encourage all girls that I know to go with little to no makeup. And I always make a point that if I see someone who normally wears a lot of makeup that is going without to point out how beautiful they are.

I always hoped to do this at my school, since I go to a junior high with 8th and 9th graders, and sadly, lots of the girls are convinced they aren’t pretty with makeup. Hopefully, I can successfully be able to do this as well (:
