This BuzzFeed Video “I’m a Christian, but I’m not…” Makes One Glaring Omission I HAVE to Talk About

BuzzFeed has created this new video which attempts to break down some of the stereotypes that surround Christians and Christianity as a whole.

The video was quite interesting and telling, but don’t take my word for it. Take a look for yourself:

Now, I’m not doubting that these individuals are Christians, nor am I here to ridicule them. They are like most of our peers. Though the people they “interviewed” for this video seem to have the same stance on major controversial issues within the Church, I’m not going to talk about that here. What’s shocking about this video is the surprising omission of Jesus. Yes BuzzFeed, Jesus.

Jesus seems to be missing a lot these days. You see the Bible, well Jesus, does say “to love your neighbor as yourself”, but what does it say first? Love God with your whole heart, soul and mind. For all I know, these individuals did say that, but BuzzFeed edited it out. I don’t know. But reading some of the comments on this video and the surprising amount of “amens” beaming from my social streams, I’m a bit taken back. As a Christian, I shouldn’t have to remind people what Christianity is about.

So, PI let’s not condemn this video. I do think there are some good parts about it. Heck, it’s opening up a conversation about Christianity in a somewhat positive light. But, let me be clear….

Being a Christian is…. loving God first and allowing HIS love to seep into every aspect of your life.

Being a Christian is… knowing Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior.

Being a Christian is… not judging people for who they are.

Being a Christian is… admitting that we are all sinners.

Being a Christian is…. admitting that we’re not perfect.

Being a Christian is… loving our enemies even when it’s extremely hard to do.

Can you add to this?

I’d love to see, because after watching this video I could REALLY use some more.

The video was a list of ”nots”. If Jesus is on your not list (and you’re a christian), there’s a problem. If seen Christian whine about this video endlessly, and it’s ridiculous…

I believe that a big part of being a Christian is carrying your cross. The Bible says, in so many words, to take up our crosses to follow Jesus. I also believe that another HUGE part of being a Christian is acknowledging the fact that Jesus not only died for your sins, but for the sins of others as well.

    – Being a Christian is not only being a believer of Christ, but (more importantly) being a follower of Christ as well. (You obviously believe in him if you follow him)

    – Being a Christian is having the Word of God as a guide of life. (Since God is the Word, and you follow God, wouldn’t it make sense to see what he has to say?)

    – Being a Christian is knowing that we are not of this world, and are only living in it. (II Corinthians 4:18)

    – Being a Christian is NOT defining God on human logic. (If people try to determine whether God is real or not based on human logic, they’ll never believe in him. Logically speaking, it’s impossible for a man to walk on water or for a sea to split in half at the raising of a staff. But our God isn’t limited by human logic, is he? 😉 )

    – Being a Christian is more than going to Church every week. Sitting on a pew doesn’t make you a Christian. If that was true, then why have demon possessed people done it before? It’s all about having a personal relationship with Christ.

    – Being a Christian is not being apart of a religion. You either believe in Christ or you don’t. There’s not necessarily any rules to keep! Just read the Bible, go to Church for GUIDANCE (if you need it), keep the Sabbath holy, keep God 1st, be unashamed, and display Christ’s love ALWAYS!!!

Being a Christian is: having a personal relationship with Jesus, and following what the Bible says, not what’s “popular” in the world.

Being a Christian is: “loving the sinner and hating the sin.”

Being a Christian: does not mean that you have to be okay with everything that goes on in the world. Most of the time, Christians hold the unpopular opinion and are ridiculed because of it.

Being a Christian is: being honest. If a friend who is a Christian is participating in things that are against what God’s word says, I don’t think it’s okay to condone simply because you don’t want to offend them. If you truly care for them, tell them the truth about it.

Being a Christian is: complex, confusing, and at times hard. But stay dedicated 🙂

As Christians we do judge others for who they are. If I say Jesus is a good God I’m judging Him for the God he is or who he is. Jesus called a woman a dog because she was a gentile (He judged her for who she is), and his original mission was for His people not the gentiles. Matthew 15:21-28 | John 7:24

Being a Christian is following Jesus and being like Him.
Being a Christians is being selfless and compassionate.
Being a Christian is hating sin (yes I said hate).
Being a Christians is being a leader and laying your life down for others.
Being a Christian is not loving your life to death, being involved in the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life.

Jesus also wants Christians to discern between evil and good, right and wrong, children of God and children of the devil (John 8:44). So yeah… God also commands Christians to be perfect (Matthew 5:48). We are NOT perfect defined by the world, but through His blood we are made perfect.

This video is what’s exactly wrong with society today!! That you can a “Christian” and still be gay, still believe in sex before marriage, ect…. I’m sorry friends, but you can’t! These are the type of people who will stand before God on Judgement Day and God will say, “Depart from me, you workers of iniquity! I never knew you!!”. You can go to church and listen to all the Christian music you want to, but unless you are bearing GOOD fruit, it’s not going to get you anywhere! Ok, I’m done now lol!!! *Steps off soap box*

Ok, what? You can’t be a Christian if you’re gay? So… not everyone can be Christian then? Just wondering.

No, you can be a Christian if you’re gay, but the thing is you are disobeying God. God tells us a relationship should be between a female and a male. Thus, if you have accepted Christ as your Personal Savior, you will go to heaven, but since you disobeyed God you will not be rewarded the same as people who had obeyed Christ on this earth. No saying that homosexuals are the only one who would not be rewarded. If you have sex before marriage too, you will not be rewarded the same as people who did obey God. Did I answer your question? 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Love is the most important thing, but where does the love come from? What kind of love and why do we show it? Everything they said is meaningless without Jesus behind it. They’re just flowery words. This frustrates me because I don’t think it is helpful. Let’s make our own video using Dave’s list.

Being a Christian is… holding on to what the Bible says, not conforming to worldly standards.

Being a Christian is… taking a stand for what we believe, not backing down or adapting them to make us look better.

Being Christian is calling sin, sin but still loving the person.

If we tell people what they’re doing is fine then we are saying they don’t need Christ. Christ is love. But he still told people they were sinners.
