TODAY’S HOT TOPIC: The Pope’s on Twitter–Will You Follow Him?

Hey sweet girls! Did you know that Pope Benedict XVI is now tweeting? Seriously! He sent his first tweet out last week, and it read:

Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.” (@Pontifex)

You can even tweet him a question. Just send it to his personal account via the hashtag #askpontifex.

He obviously won’t be answering all questions, but he’s already answered some. For example, one woman asked:

Any suggestions on how to be more prayerful when we are so busy with the demands of work, families and the world?

    The pope replied:

Offer everything you do to the Lord, ask his help in all the circumstances of daily life and remember that he is always beside you.

So far the pontiff has 1, 248,229 followers and he has 7 other Twitter accounts in various languages. The response to this news has been diverse. While some think it’s really great and feel closer to him, others are very cynical and negative.

I think it’s kind of cool, but also a little weird!  I mean, isn’t tweeting considered “worldly?” But at the same time, social media has become the best method to send messages out to the masses, right?

So what do you think? Do you think it’s a great idea for the pope to be tweeting? Will you follow him? What question would you ask him?

    1. The thing about the Church is that she understands that while her teaching do not change, the ways she reaches out to the world does need to. I would totally follow the Pope on Twitter (especially since I’m Catholic), but I don’t have atwitter account.

    2. Sorry, but I’m a little confused on what you mean by twitter being “worldly.” Do you mean only some use it in a worldly manner (ie cyberbullying, sexual predators), or is the concept of social media worldly in general? I’m just a little confused, since I use social media to keep track of friends and family; is that worldly too? I hope this doesn’t sound disrespectful in the least bit (its easy to misinterpret comment meanings), I’m just curious. thanks! 🙂

    3. Hmmm maybe. I’m strictly Christian though, not Catholic. It would depend on what his tweets are like. If he started tweeting about “Mother Mary” and all that I’d probably unfollow him. Also, nothing about Twitter is “worldly” unless used in that way.

      • What’s wrong with him talking about Mary? Without Mary, we wouldn’t have Jesus, and without Jesus, we’d all go to hell. I’d say that Mary’s pretty dang important. Also: they bless Mary like any other Christian denomination, not worship like some of the rumors I’ve heard.
