Hey sweet girls! Did you know that Pope Benedict XVI is now tweeting? Seriously! He sent his first tweet out last week, and it read:
Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.” (@Pontifex)
You can even tweet him a question. Just send it to his personal account via the hashtag #askpontifex.
He obviously won’t be answering all questions, but he’s already answered some. For example, one woman asked:
Any suggestions on how to be more prayerful when we are so busy with the demands of work, families and the world?
The pope replied:
Offer everything you do to the Lord, ask his help in all the circumstances of daily life and remember that he is always beside you.
So far the pontiff has 1, 248,229 followers and he has 7 other Twitter accounts in various languages. The response to this news has been diverse. While some think it’s really great and feel closer to him, others are very cynical and negative.
I think it’s kind of cool, but also a little weird! I mean, isn’t tweeting considered “worldly?” But at the same time, social media has become the best method to send messages out to the masses, right?
So what do you think? Do you think it’s a great idea for the pope to be tweeting? Will you follow him? What question would you ask him?
