Want to Workout But Don’t Like the Idea of Exercise? You Have to Read This!

I have to be honest- I’m not the biggest fan of working out. I like things that keep me active but are fun to do at the same time. Read these tips and try them out to make exercising more fun!

1. Head to an arcade with your friends and play air hockey or ping pong! It’s relatively cheap, a great way to bond with your friends and challenge them to a game and something different to do! Plus, you’ll get your arms moving and help tone them. I love this idea!

2. Take a dance class! If you’re a member of a gym, they almost always offer a few classes from hip-hop to Zumba. What is Zumba?  It’s a Brazilian workout that works out your whole body as you dance to the music, it’s one of my all-time favorite things to do!

3. Try taking a rock climbing class! You can have challenges with your friends to see how high you can go, while really working out your legs and butt. This one is not for people scared of heights! But you’re tied to a rope so you won’t fall.

4. Jump rope! This is one of the best cardio exercises. You’ll burn so many calories you won’t believe it! To make it more interesting, make sure you listen to your iPod and download some workout music to help you get pumped up! And get one of those armbands so your iPod won’t slip.

5. Pilates! This is also one of my favorite ways to burn calories. It stretches your muscles and also tones your body all over. If you do it for a month, 3x a week- I promise you’ll see a noticeable difference! Check ahead of time to see if the instructor provides music — that’s even more fun!

6.  Try canoeing or rowing a boat! This only works if you live near a lake but it’s also a good way to spend time with your friends!

7. Take a swimming class! Many gyms have nice pools and the classes are free as long as you have a membership. You can start out in an easy class and then once you get more experienced, work your way up to an advanced class! This is one of the all time best exercises to lose weight.

8. Have a hula-hooping contest! This will bring you back to your childhood, and it’s a great way to strengthen your abs! Try and see how many you can do in a row, then try to increase your number. The best length of time to do this is for 20 minutes. The reason is once you hit this length of time you start to get the cardiovascular benefits (which means you burn the most calories!).

9. Go roller skating! Head to a rink with your friends and groove to the music. It’s also a great idea for a date if you have a boyfriend. Or, you can rollerblade outside but make sure to wear a helmet.

10. Play Dance Dance Revolution! This is such a fun game. You get to listen to great music while practicing your steps to perfect the dance to the song! I LOVE this game. Look up Youtube’s ‘dance dance revolution experts’ and you’ll be surprised how many people are obsessed with this game! There are professional contests for the most skilled dancers — it’s pretty funny.

    This is sort of cheesy, but we have an elliptical machine thing and what I do is i watch netflix or amazon prime for an hour while I walk. Super easy and I get to watch my favorite show(s).
    But sometimes I also just set an alarm for like 30 minutes and dance to my favorite music.

    I’ve been taking Zumba since I was thirteen years old. I love it and won’t be letting go. I’m actually planning on getting my certification soon. Try it if you haven’t 🙂

    DDR, dancing, and swimming are my life! Instead of taking a Zumba class, you could also dance to your own music. But do take a dance class if you’re not good at dancing.

    If you don’t care for the music on DDR, try Dance Praise! Great Christian music from all kinds of genres (on the extension packs). It is played by hooking the mat to a computer though.

    Love the ideas, I think I’ll be doing hula-hooping & jump-roping with my sibs. =^.^= I never have time for exercise (I get enough work anyway, since I have to help take care of the farm) and every time I try to, I get bored!

    I will deffinately be doing the hula hooping and jump roping! I took a salsa class at a college for about 3 months. it was SO fun, a great workout, and FREE! I met lots of new people and the steps were actually really easy. I could even practice at home with music from youtube! thanks so much for this Nicole.

      the place i went to to go rock climbing was in Murrieta, California. they had a low slack line a high slack line, a lot of rock climbing walls, a volleyball/basketball court, cageball, yoga classes, and a bunch of equipment that any regular gym would have. I had a blast and I want to go back again!

    Lol Nicole, you do zumba?! My mom has the dvd set for that. I highly recommend Turbo Jam. You burn a lot of calories and after a week of doing it, you’ll get so use to it, it won’t feel like exercising! I do it to lose weight and relieve stress.

    Kind of like the concept of Zumba, me and my sister play Just Dance 3 on XBox Kinect on Sweat Mode. It’s really fun.

    You could also take a tumbling/gymnastics class. Im on a tumbling and trampoline team, and its really fun, and great excersise!!

    I wanted to lose weight so I started running…four days later I stopped and haven’t started since. Oops! But my most effective excercise: joining a musical!! I made a musical last summer and lost a lot of weight! (AND I was even eating two dinners at that time: one before and one after rehearsal because it was such a good workout I was always hungry after).

    I love these ideas! You forgot to add Ice Skating for those of us who live up north, though xD But many of these things are hard for me to do because I don’t have a driver’s license and my parents can’t get me rides most of the time… I’ll try and do the workouts I can do at home, though. Which pretty much leaves jump roping, hula hoop, and pilates… And once summer arrives, I can go swimming, too. So basically I can only do jump roping because I’ve never been able to hula hoop and pilates requires supplies that I don’t have. Well, I’m off to jump rope in the garage in 30* weather… Gotta love being too tall to do it indoors >.>

      For a while, I took a karate class, and i lost weight and gained a better appetite and i felt very good. But, thanks to the economy, we dont really have the money to do that anymore, and honestly, I hate hardcore excercises. Theyre boring and strenuous. At least if youre having fun while you’re working out, you dont notice if youre sore or really tired until later–your having too much fun to tell! 🙂

    Id love to get an xbox 360 with a kinect and the dance dance revolution game! lots of fun and it has mass appeal. A wii would be just as fun though! There’s wii fit, wii play, wii sports, tons of games that get you moving!

    Just thought id throw this in. i hate doing boring workouts like going jogging or something. a few weeks ago i went to a CIY conference in corvallis oregon and we had to walk every where and my legs were really starting to hurt. and i didnt figure out why till the end of the week. one of our seniors in out youth group had group this thing called a Slack line. you tie it up between two trees then you try to balance and walk across it. and believe me its harder than it sounds. well i found out its a really good core workout and its amzingly fun and crazy to try with friends. goggle it. i guarantee you lovee it!

    I am a huge fan of your website and I totally love the questions you adress. I love this question also and was just wondering… do you have any tips for weight loss? I do ballet every day of the week at least 2 to 3 classes a day also but still dont feel like I am a healthy weight!

      If you’re doing ballet, you do NOT need to lose weight!! that’s what ballerinas think, that they have to be skinny skinny skinny! God created you to have a few curves, to embrace your body! please don’t diet- I can tell you’re already perfect. 🙂

        I dance also! I do ballet, Jazz, Modern,…etc. I dance for about 11 hours and 30mins. every week! My friends who dance with me are always talking about how they need to lose weight!! It’s CRAZY!! I see how beautiful they are and how different each one of them is made and think they are all pretty! I try to tell them that they are beautiful but some of them just won’t listen! They are always comparing their own bodies to others! It’s sad!

    I hate excercising but when i find myself sitting around with nothing to do, I make myself run up and down the staircase which is good exercise. It’s pathetic how out of shape I am tho haha

        I didn’t want to buy a Zumba DVD in case I never used it (that’s how I usually am with exercise stuff) so I just looked up vids on YouTube. It’s pretty fun, but way harder than I thought it would be haha

    yea, i love these! maybe i could add, invest in a wii! they will definitely help! i have one, and you need to buy special disks for them, but it is so worth the price! there are plenty of fun games that help you lose weight-running; hula-hooping; and many more that make exercizing look fun =)
