What Is True Beauty? Part I
Written by Aysha Ives | June 14, 2012
Society focuses on physical appearance, so much so that girls are now overly preoccupied with it. Young ladies are struggling with eating disorders, dressing provocatively, and experiencing low self esteem–all because of the ridiculously high expectations that the world places on girls and young women.
However, we as God’s children know something that the world doesn’t:
God looks at our INNER beauty, because the beauty displayed by our inner person FAR outweighs what we look like from the outside.
Consider what God tells Samuel when he was sent to anoint David as Israel’s king. Samuel initially thought that Eliab, because of his appearance, was the one to be anointed. But the Lord said to Samuel:
Do not consider how handsome or tall he is. I have not chosen him. I do not look at the things people look at. Man looks at how someone appears on the outside. But I look at what is in the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).
God is more concerned with who you are on the inside than what you look like on the outside! You see, God created each of us in His own image, so we’re all physically beautiful in His sight. This is what is written in Psalms 139:13-17:
You created the deepest parts of my being. You put me together inside my mother’s body. How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that. What you have done is wonderful. I know that very well. None of my bones was hidden from you when you made me inside my mother’s body. That place was as dark as the deepest parts of the earth. When you were putting me together there, your eyes saw my body even before it was formed. You planned how many days I would live. You wrote down the number of them in your book before I had lived through even one of them. God, your thoughts about me are priceless. No one can possibly add them all up (Psalms 139:13-17).
Your obedience to God is most important to Him. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look attractive. In fact, God wants us to present ourselves in a respectable manner because we represent HIM! However, our true beauty is demonstrated by our personality, how we act, what we say, and how we love one another.
Here are a few traits that GOD finds beautiful:
In upcoming articles we’ll more thoroughly discuss these traits and other characteristics that define inner beauty. What are some other attributes you think should be on this list?
