What Is True Beauty? Part I

Society focuses on physical appearance, so much so that girls are now overly preoccupied with it. Young ladies are struggling with eating disorders, dressing provocatively, and experiencing low self esteem–all because of the ridiculously high expectations that the world places on girls and young women.

However, we as God’s children know something that the world doesn’t:

God looks at our INNER beauty, because the beauty displayed by our inner person FAR outweighs what we look like from the outside.

Consider what God tells Samuel when he was sent to anoint David as Israel’s king. Samuel initially thought that Eliab, because of his appearance, was the one to be anointed. But the Lord said to Samuel:

Do not consider how handsome or tall he is. I have not chosen him. I do not look at the things people look at. Man looks at how someone appears on the outside. But I look at what is in the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).

God is more concerned with who you are on the inside than what you look like on the outside! You see, God created each of us in His own image, so we’re all physically beautiful in His sight. This is what is written in Psalms 139:13-17:

You created the deepest parts of my being. You put me together inside my mother’s body. How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that. What you have done is wonderful. I know that very well. None of my bones was hidden from you when you made me inside my mother’s body. That place was as dark as the deepest parts of the earth. When you were putting me together there, your eyes saw my body even before it was formed. You planned how many days I would live. You wrote down the number of them in your book before I had lived through even one of them. God, your thoughts about me are priceless. No one can possibly add them all up (Psalms 139:13-17).

Your obedience to God is most important to Him. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look attractive. In fact, God wants us to present ourselves in a respectable manner because we represent HIM! However, our true beauty is demonstrated by our personality, how we act, what we say, and how we love one another.

Here are a few traits that GOD finds beautiful:

    • Humility
    • Love
    • Honesty
    • Courage
    • Selflessness
    • Forgiveness

In upcoming articles we’ll more thoroughly discuss these traits and other characteristics that define inner beauty. What are some other attributes you think should be on this list?

    1. I hate it when people avoid me because I don’t look “pretty enough.” It makes me feel inferior but at the same time it makes me think of how our society looks at beauty. It makes me mad when people look at our outward appearance, not our hearts.

    2. this quote will forever stick with me. we were watching a video series on purity in our youth group one night when the man said, “You value is in Christ, and your beauty is in your pursuit of Him.” 🙂

    3. I heard a quote before and it was, “Everyone is beautiful, but not everyone can see it.” So just because one person, might not think you’re beautiful, does NOT mean you aren’t beautiful. You are! Unfortunely, they can’t see it. God can see everyone’s beauty, and He made someone specifically for you that will think you are beyond beautiful! And besides, everyone is beautiful cause God made us that way & to reflect Him, cause He is beautiful 🙂 So don’t let anyone’s judgments effect you, only God can! ♥

    4. Everyone has some beauty about him or her. You should never think that you are not beautiful. God took time to design you, to create your nose just the way it is. Perhaps He made your ears small, and your lips as full as they are.
God has not made you a disappointment or a disaster. He does not make such things.
If you are short, being short is beautiful. If you are black, being black is beautiful, and if you are white, being white is equally beautiful.

    5. So many people focus on outer beauty- but as I get older I realize more and more that outer beauty is fleeting. Cultivating a heart of beauty- that will last forever. And your inner beauty shines in your eyes and smile and through your actions and words. God’s beauty in you- now that’s a radiance!

    6. This is really good and very encouraging to girls who may be struggling with low self esteem. Thanks so much for writing it! Sometimes I tend to get intimidated because I see other girls who are so drop dead gorgeous, and their hair is always perfect, and their face has no acne, and they get all the boy’s attention. When that happens I start to feel so ugly and worthless and unwanted. But then I am reminded of God’s undying love and how I’m fearfully and wonderfully made. This encouraged me and inspired me, thanks again!

    7. So then why does PI need to judge female celebrities on the way they dress or look on the outside? Just because someone dresses to “provocative” for you doesn’t mean they are “unwholesome” or not a Christian.

      • Its because a lot of people look up to those kinds of celebrities and they will only judge them by what they see since most of us will never get the chance to actually meet them. things like cosmopolitan that have inappropriate images and content that completely defiles the idea of purity in young women and insecurities can start wedging into their heart.

        • So, it’s okay to judge, is what your saying. Even though God said don’t judge.

    8. YES!! I agree. Before being born again in Christ I was always noticed simply for the way that I looked particularly my body type. I was so humbled and grateful To God that He had shown me such a pure love through his son Jesus..I just oculdn’t understand it. In the society we live in SEX is EVERYWHERE and women are often times seen merely as ab object (sometimes we don’t help because we contribute to this but, thats another story)The popular thing now a days is getting some body part enhanced or doing your make up perfect in order to look a certain way..and that KILLS ME. It is ALWAYS A MATTER OF THE HEART. Like I mentioned to a friend of mine I do think that wanting to under go a surgical procedure that has nothing to do with a m edical complication has a lot to do with one’s self esteem. If women were not constantly compared to other women…or expected to look a certain way or told that the way they look is not good enough…they would not be bothered by their appearance. The most beautiful thing a woman can have is not seen in the physical things but in the spiritual. Our God like characteristics and the fruit we bear is what makes us beautiful. We spend so much time and effort into something so passive…beauty is fleeting and it whiters like the grass… and in waiting on God He will you unite you to a man who has a heart after his own and is wise enough to understand that. Our ulitmate desire should be to appeal to God (doesn’t mean we have to go around with messed up hair or mismatching..) but the physical should not be our priority! As you grow in understanding your worth in the eyes of God..and the purpose for which you were called…… become a threat not only to satan but to those around you…because TRUST ME…when a woman of God is secure on Christ…and when she has understood that SHE IS COMPLETE IN CHRIST…NOTHING WILL MOVE HER Be Blessed ladies!!!

      • You put this so well! I agree FULLY with everything that you say! God made all of us and he never makes ugly creations! Every human on earth is loved by the King of all other kings, the one who made everything seen and unseen. If you just sit back and think about that for a moment, you can truly see just how special you are.

I am so glad that I read your comment, Heavenleejewel! You are truly an inspiration to those who you meet! Thank you for posting this uplifting comment! May God bless you and your family! 🙂
